For those who do not want "CiTi HiTz" - get it deactivated or pay

Today is the last day that CiTi HiTz will be available free of charge and those of you who do not want the channel will have to call Dialog TV and get it disconnected tomorrow or the SET plan that contains "CiTi HiTz" will be activated automatically tomorrow.

Normally the process should be to call and get the channel activated but there is a twist in the process regarding "CiTi HiTz" probably since Dialog thinks that it is extremely popular which would result in Dialog TV customer care being inundated with calls for CiTi HiTz activation. However the other might prove quite true for Dialog. "CiTi HiTz" telecasts old stale teledrama's and not many movies or no movies at all and is an utter disappointment. For a channel that boasts of following international channels such as HBO there is a long way to go. However "Channel C" is proving to be more popular. On the long run if there is no major improvement with "CiTi HiTz" the channel will have to be discontinued. Now lets see if there is any improvement with "CiTi HiTz" once they start getting subscription revenues however so far the channel has shown no reason why it should be paid subscription to be watched.

The Dialog TV bill for the month of March gives an indication that the CiTi HiTz rental of Rs 50/= will be charged automatically unless disconnected by request. The request is also not a simple process and has been made as complicated as possible to discourage subscribers from requesting removal of "CiTi HiTz". Subscribers who have requested for CiTi HiTz removal over the weekend have been informed that the request is possible only on April 1st and thereafter. Upon request the channel will apparently be available until end of April and the agent will issue a complain number requesting for Rs 50/= refund on the bill. It is however not clear whether the customer will have to call at the end of April and initiate a complain requesting for a refund of Rs 50/= or whether this will be done at the time of requesting for removal of "CiTi HiTz".

This is "Dialog TV - The Future Today" way of doing it when it comes to an unpopular channel and is quite contrary to the way that "Dialog GSM - The Future Today" does business. We hope that Mr. Nushad CEO of Dialog TV and Dr. Hans CEO of Dialog Telekom and officials of Telekom Malaysia take note of what is happening right under their noses and hopefully will not turn a blind eye to these developments. It is hard to image that something like this is happening under companies managed by these esteemed individuals in Sri Lankan Corporate circles.

In addition "CiTi HiTz" was introduced after the removal of Animax (a channel available FOC for certain packages) and "Channel C" was introduced upon removal of Zee Music (a channel available FOC for certain packages). The replacement channels are to be charged for in almost all packages as SET plans. Dialog should provide suitable free replacements for Animax and Zee Music (according to the packages that the channels were available in originally) or reintroduce the channels ASAP.

The recent happenings at Dialog TV indicate that the management of Dialog TV is not capable of handling their operations and it is upto Dialog Telekom to take steps to replace the individuals concerned.

In other news we have reliable information that Dialog TV are testing MPEG4 internally but they have not formulated any rollout plans as yet.

Please keep us updated on the latest on Dialog TV as the days progress.

Aren't Dialog clever or what!

First they remove Zee music.
Then they intorduce Channel C in that slot.
After a few months if the subscriber doesn't want Channel C he not only loses that particular channel but he will lose Zee Music which was originally included in the particular package.

Someone please Correct me if I'm wrong!
Imagine you have a certain package which has Zee Music.
You'll lose 1 channel (Zee music) and get another (Chennel C) for free.
YOu refuse to pay for Channel C and at the end of few months you'll lose that channel too.
Also you won't get Zee Music back again!
How many channels will you lose? How much reduction will you get in your subscription charges if you lose any channels?

Way to go dialog!

What a way to collect money?

Every one should go for some other DTH providers and get value for their money.

DISH TV / BIG TV / TATASKY are some of the option.

I think most of people here needs to discontine the Citi Hitz as if the channel is charging 50/- from their packages.

If so, it's better to send a fax request other than calling the customer care i presume since DTV customer care is taking time to answer the calls.

In such, Please send your request with a photo copy of your NID (Both sides) to them to act on your request.

As out of topic, can we buy the mobile satellite dish antenna unit as if Dish tv is providing for it's mobile dish.
Will this antenna is working for DTV if we use our decorder instead.

The antenna's were made by raySat Inc, http://www.raysat.com

I don't want to pay a cent for this 'CitiShits'.
The local channels have already been overflowed with tele dramas, then who needs another channel that only shows old tele dramas? It doesn't atleast telecast good tele dramas like, Pitagamkarayo, Kadulla, Kadawara... I saw only Dandubasnamaya.

I'd have selected it, if it telecasts old/new Sinhala movies.

I think DTV knows that no one will get that channel, if they scrambled it first and told the customers to ask for the activation. So they choosed the otherway and has discouraged the customers, by making the process complicated, to disconnect it as admin said.

When I bought DTV premium package SET SAB was included in the channel list. So that means i agreed to pay a certain amount of money to view fixed number of channels.after sometime without any prompting by me SET SAB was replaced by DTV with CityHitz at their own discretion.NOW if i dont pay extra 50/- CityHitz will be removed. Hence i now pay the same amount for a reduced number of channels. Isnt this hoodwinking the customer! shame on Dialog for resorting unethical buissness practices like this especially the sneaky operation of trying to force CityHitz on us.This will be same operation they will follow on Channel C

I know big bunch of people (including my relatives and lot of my friends) really like to watch "Citi Hitz" and they are ready to pay for it and retain it in their Dialog TV package as long as "Citi Hitz" in the business. I know there are some areas they have to improve and hope they'll improve in those areas in coming days. In the meantime I can understand why you guys are "Citi Hitz" reffering as a crap, cause I think most of the people talking and sharing ideas here are English oriented and not have that much concern about Sinhala language programs, I assume if Dialog TV give full English channels packages without any other language channels you guys will be happy than any body else. I am right isn't it? Be patriotic guys, be supportive to Sinhala media institutions to grow up and become media giants.

PLEASE TRY TO UNDERSATAND AND RESPOND ACCORDINGLY.

kumara said...

MATES,

IF YOU ARE MAKING A COMPLAINT TO TRC THERE IS A CERTAIN PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW. YOU CAN GET AN UNDERSATDING ABOUT THIS PROCEDURE BY VISITING THEIR FOLLOWING WEB SITE
http://www.trc.gov.lk/consumer.htm

JUST TO GIVE YOU ALL SOME UNDERSTAINDING ABOUT THIS I WILL COPY THE DETAILS HERE.

"Making a Complaint
Before making a complaint.
• Study your complaint carefully and be clear about it.
• Try to have all the documents relevant to the complaint ready.
• Make the complaint to your service provider. Try to make the complaint always in writing attaching relevant documents. (If you make the complaint over the phone it is better if you could follow it with a letter.)
• Make sure you give all the details needed to process your complaint E.g. Your telephone No, Address copies of the necessary documents.
• Give the description of your complaint briefly and precisely.
After making the complaint
• Keep all the records of your complaint made. (If you made the complaint over the phone the name of the person/s you spoke to, the date. And the answer/s received etc.)
• Give your service provider a reasonable time frame to process the complaint. (Depending on the complaint.) Follow up with them over the phone if possible.
• If you have not received a response or a reasonable solution to your complaint you may appeal to higher authorities/committees formed by the service provider to solve complaints.
• If you still feel if your complaint has not been treated in a reasonable manner or to your satisfaction, you can make the complaint to the TRCSL for further examination.

SO IT IS IMPORTANT THAT FIRST WE MAKE A COMPLAIN TO DTV ABOUT THIS UNREASONBLE PRACTISE AND IF THERE IS NO RESPONSE WITHIN REASONABLE TIME, THEN COMPLAIN TO TRC.

IF WE ALL AGREE WE CAN CONTINUE...

WHEN THERE WERE ATTEMPTS TO MAKE COMPLAIN TO TRC PREVIOUSLY, THE DTV GOONS PLANTED IN THE BLOG BY DTV, MADE ALL SORT OF NOISES AND PREVENTED IT HAPPENNING AND DTV CONTINUED ITS MERRY WAYS.

I AM NOT SURE WHETHER SAME THING WILL HAPPEN AGAIN..

theres nothing wrong with having a sinhala movie channel or music channel. infact, its high time that we got such channels. and as for channel c, its a different story. the local music industry is much more fast paced than the movie industry.

i woudnt have minded having citihitz if they actually showed "movies". that is not a proper movie channel. they just keep playing old sinhala teledramas. thats what makes it "shittyhitz" i'm sure most will agree that if we wanted to watch sinhala teledramas we would switch to freely available local channels like swarnavahini or rupavahini and watch brand new ones instead of getting dtv. who wants to pay and watch old teledramas???

If the company can't make money selling their channel, they should start a kopi kade or something. If the coffee is good we can all go there and buy coffee.

Does it mean that all old customers have to upgrade to the new 2000+ package to keep getting all the channels? B'cos dialog will be removing channels and adding new 50/- extra channels and if you have another 5 or 6 such channels what will happen to old premium customers.

In a move that will lower the bill of the five-million direct-to-home (DTH) consumers by 5-8 per cent, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked channels to reduce the bouquet rates on DTH platform by April 4.

The move will affect the subscription revenue of Star TV, Zee Group, Sony-One Alliance, Sun Network, ESPN-Star Sports, among others, who will have to significantly reduce prices for selling signals to DTH players.

However, this will help DTH operators lower the subscription fees. The average monthly fees per subscriber is about Rs 250 at present.

According to Trai’s pricing formula for broadcasters, pay channels can charge DTH operators up to 50 per cent of the per subscriber rates they charge from the cable operators in the rest of the country (non-CAS homes).

This means that if Star TV’s bouquet of 14 channels is priced at Rs 88 in non-CAS areas (70 million cable TV homes), it can charge only Rs 44 or less from existing DTH operators like Tata Sky, Dish TV and new entrants like Big TV, Bharti and Sun Direct. But all broadcasters are charging more from DTH companies than from non-CAS cable homes.

Explaining this industry analyst said: “As DTH platform is digital, there is 100 per cent collection of fees, while in the cable sector, the under-declaration (cable operators declare a lower susbcriber base than the actual) is 25-35 per cent. Therefore, even at a lower subscriber base, broadcasters earn more from DTH companies than from cable homes.”

Senior executives of most pay channels said they would abide by Trai’s order. “We are drafting the new rates, which will be submitted to Trai within the deadline,” said a senior Zee group executive.

Star TV India executives said the law would be followed. However, executives of sports broadcaster ESPN-Star Sports said discussions were on within the company.

The leading sports broadcasters has a three-channel bouquet (ESPN, Star Sports and Star Cricket) and its per subscriber cable rates are about Rs 45. However, instead of charging Rs 22 or less, ESPN India is charging DTH players Rs 50 per subscriber for just two channels.

Leading regional broadcaster Sun Network is also charging more, sources say. Its bouquet rates for cable homes are said to be Rs 114 per subscriber while it is charging Rs 83 per subscriber from DTH operators.

According to an earlier TDSAT order (appellate tribunal for broadcasters and telecom operators), Sun Network has to provide DTH players its bouquet of 16 regional channels for Rs 25 per subscriber.

“The Trai directive will help bring in parity in rates,” said a senior executive of Dish TV, the country’s largest DTH company.

Just couple of years back India did not have a single household with Satellite television connection. Consumers had to be satisfied with arbitrarily-laid-poor-signal terrestrial cable connections to watch their favorite TV shows.

Not anymore- In last 2 years itself more than 8,00,000 (Eight lakh) subscribers have opted for satellite-based direct-to-home (DTH) services. The financial muscle of the two operators - Dish TV and Tata Sky - the Zee and Tata groups, respectively, has resulted in aggressive marketing and advertising blitz - Shah Rukh Khan is Dish’s brand ambassador - tipping the scales.

Now, Reliance ADAG’s Big TV all set for March-2008 launch. They have already opened it up for Reliance employees and their families.

Reliance ADA Group’s Big TV is reportedly slated to commercially go on air in late March 2008, though some Reliance employees are already using the service. The channel claims to have 86 channels on air right now, with 64 expected to come on board over the next couple of weeks.

The company is offering the service to its employees at Rs 1,000, along with a monthly subscription package of Rs 325, which would entitle them to watch the channels being aired and also provide them with Rs 100 worth of Pay Per View (PPV) movies.

Big TV will be offering MPEG4 technology for the first time in the country and has the capacity of up to 250 TV channels, which it claims is much more than any current DTH operator. Subscribers will have access to 32 PPV channels, which will showcase Bollywood, Hollywood and regional films.

Big TV has priced it quite aggressively with Rs.1000 as the entry point that is nearly two times lower than its competitor Dish TV and SkyTV.

Globally, satellite-based direct-to-home (DTH) services have grown drastically over last few years and in some cases even beating the traditional cable connections. I see the same happening in India.

Along with these 3 operators, India is also going to see 2 more providers come in this arena.

The more the merrier!

I have not yet opted for satellite based services, if any of the readers have it in their homes- what is your experience?

I think Dialog is waiting to roll out MPEG-4 technology before adding more channel. Either they are not very good at multi-tasking, or else they have made a good plan (probably the first).

So the fate of the new channels depends on how the MPEG-4 testing goes, how long it takes to strike deals with the hardware manufacturers, how long it takes to produce the harware, and how long it takes to setup and test the system. Hopefully they will hurry up.

We'll have to be satisfied with the existing channels for now.

By the way, Comedy Central is not available in Asia. It is a good channel though.

Hi Guys,

Are the subscribers in the Once Premium Package - 1400 (1620 + VAT),
no longer considered as premium package customers, now that the package structure and prices have been revised?
If so, does that mean, come mpeg4,if another higher priced package is introduced, 1620 will be considered a non-premium package?

Funny business, this.

Stay cool.
Micheal.

Above should read as 1620(inclusive of VAT)

Thanks.

yea.. but there is a channel called The Comedy Channel in Australia.
Its no Comedy Central but still has an impressive line up.

Check out their wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Comedy_Channel

Maybe DTV can get that and replace few of those Hindi channels.

Sony Entertainment Television Asia is a channel dedicated to the Women. It broadcasts some interesting programmes (for women) which no channel broadcasts in India.

SET Pix Asia is a fully On Demand channel available on the SingTel Mio TV (IPTV) network in Singapore. It allows Mio TV users to choose and watch a movie of their choice at any time. There is also a sub-network named SET Pix Thriller.

Since we are in Sri Lanka and do not fall under the Indian regulations, Dialog has the ability to receive and broadcast SET Asia. It may become popular among the women even in Sri Lanka.

But there may be some broadcasting rights problem with SingTel since only Mio TV seems to be broadcasting the channel.

my personal idea is, dialog is screwing us by using the set plan!!!

it seems like channel c will also be included in to the "executive" 1949 package. and all the other poor buggers like us will have to pay an addition 50/= to get it.

Sirasa TV charges for News First on thir official web Site. If they give the service on Mobiles and Satallite they may not get the money from overseas which they charge from poor srilankans living overseas.

Hi guys long time no see. How's Avurudu. Saw an interesting article regarding MPEG2 to MPEG4 upgradability,

Scopus/Neotion enable field upgrades of MPEG-2 IRDs to MPEG-4 AVC

Source : NewVideoTechnology.net

Scopus Video Networks has unveiled a clever solution for upgrading professional MPEG-2 decoders to support MPEG-4 AVC decoding for standard-definition video, using a slot-in module developed in cooperation with French company Neotion. This solution is aimed at the installed base of MPEG-2 decoders in networks and Scopus aims to deliver a universal decoder covering HD, SD, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC next year.

"This is a dedicated solution that was co-developed by Scopus and Neotion for professional applications," notes Ovadia Cohen, VP Business Development and Marketing Communications at Scopus.

Neotion provides a number of innovative MPEG-4 AVC based solutions including its credit-card sized, plug-and-play 'pocket' decoder that will convert MPEG-2 set-top boxes into AVC capable devices. That is aimed at mass-market applications including digital terrestrial where MPEG-4 AVC is delivered into a legacy population of MPEG-2 receivers.

For this professional solution, the company's MPEG-4 Conditional Access Module (CAM) has been integrated with Scopus' MPEG-2 based IRD-2900 Integrated Receiver Decoders (IRD). This enables operators using these receiver/decoders to easily upgrade to MPEG-4 AVC in the field without the need to purchase new separate platforms.

"Several of the applications include re-encoding, format conversion monitoring and content distribution," Scopus says. "The solution also enables cable and telco operators to distribute H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) content to edges where a full decoding to analogue is performed, thereby saving up to 50 per cent in bandwidth over satellite and IP infrastructures."
