Rumors of High Definition Television (HDTV) plans

Unconfirmed reports, a better term would be rumors are surfacing that Dialog TV is planning to launch HDTV channels on their platform. If so, then they will become the first platform to do so in this region. This will be yet another first for Dialog Telekom in this region adding to their portfolio of firsts. It is a well known fact that the IS-12 the satellite that is used by them to carry out transmissions has the ability to transmit in HDTV.

There is no doubt that HDTV packages will be more expensive that the regular packages but then as time goes it will undergo a price reduction. It is also worth mentioning here that even LBN has listed HDTV as a future service in their on their digital platform.

On other fronts it seems that Dialog TV is progressing with the World Cup now with less interruptions that when the broadcast started although we feel that their is room for improvement.

Giving any service first is not worth, if the customer can’t grab it. Dialog was given 3G first in Asia, but what is the percentage from total customers use this service. Introducing new technology to countries like Sri Lanka is not viable.

Pl note that currently DTV is offering Discovery Indian feed, Because of the cost. And Giving only few Primary channels like HBO, HBO Sig & Cinemax. Even without giving good feeds for current channels , going to HDTV is useless.

Again , still very few channels are available in HDTV format in the world (Also their charges are high at this moment). Discovery, HBO Cinemax etc.. I cant believe DTV is going to offer HDTV in this stage.

Without updating at least one day EPG,
Out of 30 international channels 13 are hindi crap & most others also Indian feeds,
Can’t do the Billing for exciting customers correctly,
Take at least 20min to answer the customer care phone inquiry,
Couldn’t rectify the freezing problem From December 2nd to Today (more than 111 days)
Even with small clouds, system stucking,

Last not least, country with very few HDTV sets available.

Dear DTV Team, Gong Wada nokara, Honda service ekak deepan. Hindi nethuwa, Chinese hari deepan.

We do not agree with you at all. Don’t be so negative and take Sri Lanka back to Stone Age. We should be proud that we were able to experience 3G in this region (superb download speed, sometimes better than other XDSL services available) thanks to Dialog. One cannot comment about anything without experiencing it. It was not only the 3G that dialog was the first , but they were spree headed in rolling out number of technological advancements’ in Sri Lanka. Because of them others have to follow and finally consumer got the benefit. Also I do not see any reason why DIALOG should NOT implement HDTV. Now a days many TV's are 'HDTV ready'. So let them implement it ,setting trend, then others will follow.

It is very good that HDTV is going to be introduced to Sri Lanka. Another step ahead of the idiot local free tv providers. Even the latest providers couldn't do it in digital, let alone HD.

After all, Dialog is one of the few companies that try to bring Sri Lanka to the future. Old CRT screens are slowly being moved out, and new HD LCD screens are taking their place. One day soon, HD compatible TV sets will be a norm for the middle class, which will be the ones having Dialog TV.

@ DLR
What you say is not at all practical for Sri Lanka. Paying for Asian feeds of those channels will mean a greater bill. If Dialog introduces it, don't come running to us grumbling about the price! Anyway HDTV will be optional for only those who want and can watch it.

India assbanged, raped and thrown out of the tournament :p
Got to feel sorry for the Indian team though. I don’t know whether their homes are already set on fire by angry Indian fans. It's so retarded to treat the players like shit when you lose and worship them when they win.

At least now we'll be able to get impartial pre/post match interviews on channels such as ESPN,MAX and STAR. Previous interviews were totally biased towards India and sometimes they were praying for India to make it to the super 8s. Don’t think they even remembered that their feed is broadcast to other south Asian nations as well.

First thing must do first,

I'm happy if we have HDTV system & HDTV channels with reasonable rate. But what I'm saying is DTV have lot more things to do rather than introducing HDTV.
Remember I said only It is not viable.
As I remember in 1995 Rupavahini introduce Nicam Bi-Lingual & Strereo, 12 years back. But still they are not using it's advantage. That is why I'm saying just Introducing New service is not enough. It has to be maintain in qualitative manner. Same time reasonable no of customers must grab the service. Even though Rupavihini introduce that service, most modern TV sets dosn't consist Nicam facility. (My TV set LG-year 2005 model, Flat, 29"- but it dosn't have that facility)

I'm happy to receive HDTV service, Only after DTV sort out their simple problems like EPG, Signal Strength etc..

Again I would like to say, As A Sri LANKAN I'm very much happy to impliment any good/new technology only if it is feasible & not burden to the economy. If any foreign company comes here & introduce new technology and ask me to invest for that, I will think what portion of profit is remain in the country.

That is why I still with DTV, at least some of our guys getting salary from our contribution. Otherwise I'm definitly purchase DISHTv (Not from Huluballa, directly from India.

@ jesika: yes i noticed the chinese trailers too. its dialogs problem. they have to fix the audio feed.

Well, its always nice to see Sri Lanka being ahead of the rest of the subcontinent with regard to electronic services.

But, dtv moving into HDTV, well. thats another thing. Yes, this country needs to advance technologically, but in my opinion and as a customer of dtv, i would prefer if they invest in stepping up their existing transmission, before they give any hdtv.

and, how practical would this be? how many households have HDTV ready television sets? is it worth investing in hdtv channels and technology if the audience is just a handful? and how can you say that nowadays many tv's are HDTV ready? let alone HD ready sets, not all of our population even has normal TV sets.

and, where is the promised 3rd transponder and star package? their trying to give hdtv before they can give other things that they promised before that. They've been telling about this 3rd transponder for months now.

dialog should improve what they already have before introducing new stuff and messing it up for everyone.

Before all this, Dialog should somehow get the god damned Asian (English) Feeds to channels like Cartoon Network, Nick, Discovery, Nat Geo, History, since if I'm not mistaken everyone hates the Indian (Hindi Crap) feeds.. I wouldn't mind paying extra for some quality programs instead of 20+ Mins of Hindi ads per program (lame arsed programs too) and enduring an hour+ of telemarketing programs daily.

You have to buy free to air (FTA) satellite recever. It cost around 6000/= to 7500/= Rs. I think it's not worth to buy.No good chanels yes most tamil and hindi crap.Yes you can use DTV dish (Ku band).

Gamini:
You can use DTV Dish & the LNB, But you cant use the DTV Decoder for FTV channels. Bcos its blocked FTA.

Sachi:
Everyone likes to have Asian Feed of those channels. But the problem is they are very expensive than the Indian feed. If DTV gives those channel from Asian Feed the rental will be Rs.4000-5000 /=

Have anyone noticed the History channel is not available in this morning. A1 was there in that History channels slot. I don’t know still having the problem.

Last week LBN (on ETV) reported that DTV has got AAA rating.

How come? Satellite service is only 5% of Dialog business!!

Jessica, For a long time, they were showing AI on History Ch.

DTV will have to increase the volume level of most channels. Its too low now.

Free-man: Please check ur info carefully: LBO reported that DIALOG TELECOM has a AAA rating from Fitch Rating. NOT DTV
