"Channel C" launches today

The latest channel on the Dialog TV platform and also Sri Lanka's first 24X7 Sinhala Music Channel will be launching today officially after replacing Zee Music temporarily a few days ago. Zee Music is expected to be reintroduced later on.

We are not sure on which package this channel will be included and charging extra like they plan to do for "CiTi HiTz" from the end of this month is not a wise idea. However Dialog TV may give "Channel C" free of charge for a period of at least 3 months. This channel may prove to be more popular than "CiTi HiTz" if handled properly. It is yet to be seen if Dialog TV will give "CiTi HiTz" free for any of the existing packages after March 31st.

In other news HBO pixelation problem is still continuing and the removal of the EPG data stream, if it was done to improve picture quality has not worked. We hope that this problem is sorted out soon since this is a premier package channel and people pay more to watch these channels.

Please keep us updated on the latest on Dialog TV as the days progress.

Do you have the old CBN Sat decoder, or new one? The old decoder has a seperate black-coloured output with the label "MONO". You can use this. I'm not sure about the new one.

@ Yakuza
You shouldn't look for computers by brand name. That is not correct. Most brand names can be deceiving these days.

Search for computers under each brand name and find some you like from each of them. Then enter the product number to google and search, so you can read reviews about them. Then you can find out their hiden problems, etc. Compare the reviews of the different computers you like, and choose the one that has least problems and suits you the most.

It is a time consuming process, but it will reduce the chances of you saying "oh, I could have bought that better computer if I knew about it before" after it's too late.

You may also want to consider building your own computer from scratch. You can buy the parts which work with each other, and which suit your needs, and then get them put together by some computer company. That may be cheaper than buying brand name computers.

I'm sorry I cannot tell you about the brand names in general because all my desktop computers are home made. But please be careful when choosing a good computer, so you won't regret your choices later on.

I know this is not related to the subject but I appreciate if anyone could help me.

I have a PS2 (Play station 2) bought from Europe market. Problem that I have is that I can’t play any pirated DVD games. I checked with some places in sri lanka (MC and Liberty plaza) they charge around 12000 to fix it (just to replace the chip). I know that their giving it to someone else to fix. Can anyone give me a direct contact of someone whose capable of fixing it.

@ TECHNO.

I have the old one, & got the new one a few days ago with the new connection.

I dont think it has a separate MONO output, but just the 3 coloured jacks , yellow ( video ), white & red.

The DTV people had connected the RIGHT to my TV AUDIO input. Since its a MONO input, like CN said, it should be the LEFT channel that should be connected for a better sound quality ?

by the way, checked the signal levels in the 2 decoders, with some random channels.

Old decoder:
AVG TP was 72%,58% quality

New one was 60%, 62% quality

Channel C Audio Volume is too low

@Yakuza

If you want a Branded one go for an IBM there is a huge difference between an IBM Branded and local made ones

SLP said...

@amd
.
both white and red are used as stereo left and right.
.
you may connect the both to a one input to have a mono output in scratch.
.
however, try using the decorder itself for particular output.
.
as for stereo input, by one jack, you need to combine two wires and the next two and this combined channel provide stereo one jack input.
.
you can frin these connectors in any electronic shop.

It's better if Channel C can allocate few hours a day for Sinhala Classical music.

I checked the channel in weekend but hardly see any classical sinhala song known as 'SARALA GEE'.

Congratulations for Channel C team - I am sure this is going to be a great experience for our Sinhala music lovers...

Shurthi and Ranaroo are still scrambled. I have no idea what Dialog has to test on these channels for so long.

Either they can unscramble them for viewers top see or they can remove them to save bandwidth.

I would be more happy if DTV replaced SET instead of Zee Music to introduce C Channel

TechnoGuy Sri Lanka said...

@ Janaka
None of thoses channels are in Test Transmission.

Rana Ru is scrambled because it should be available only to authorised subscribers. Its a channel dedicated to defense affairs and raising the morale of our LK forces, so you can guess who the authorised people are.

Shruti Television is a religious channel, which is why it is scrambled.

If you were wondering why The Buddhist is not scrambled like other religious channels, The Buddhist is a free-to-air channel. Therefore it cannot be locked to individual customers.

Anonymous said...

Shurthi was unscrambled before on my request. Now it has gone to scrambled state

Can I ask DTV to unscramble it?
Will they do the same for Rana Roo

Is there any one reading this blog watching these?

TechnoGuy Sri Lanka said...

Channel C is now on CH42, and Rana Ru on CH56

@ Janaka
Shruti Television will be unscrambled on request.

But Rana Ru is only available for members of the armed forces, nobody else.

This episode on IPTV has a lot to write about. Having read comments on introduction of IPTV in Sri Lanka, prompted me to do some research on the net. It appears most of the big league guys such as BT, Singtel, Reliance, France Telecom have or about to have an IPTV offering in their service portfolio. But then…this is Sri Lanka. I am trying to dig stats on the number of customers changing from Satellit,DTH offering to Cable,IPTV but still not got. All indications are with SLT joining the TV arena, will make the service provider industry more competitive and thus bringing the prices down which is a welcome move and make it more affordable to the average customer. SLT has by far the biggest and diverse customer segments, with people of all walks of life.

Also with rumours of SLT upgrading their core IP network to 10G, would make these services faster to the end customer. After all SLT needs a very good distributed ADSL and fiber network, and a resilient core network to provide bandwidth reservation for IPTV services. Also IPTV would change the whole landscape of the TV industry bringing in the Interactive part where the customer has a choice of when/where he wants to watch the movie. I myself would like to watch movies and episodes at the time I like.

Rumour has it that DTV in a frantic move, is countering the competition by giving free decoders to premium customers, and testing MPEG4 transmission to enable them to b’cast more channels. All in all, if SLT get things in perspective, we would be not having problems of sudden channel shut out during rains and winds (no more blames on Global Warming!!), and heavy pixellation in viewing, an intrinsic issue in the Ku band reception

HBO EPG is back. But it's 1 hour late.
Also HBO Signature,HBO Hitz ,HBO Family EPG is 1 hour late.

Although it's in the same group, Cinemax EPG is correct.

DTV act quickly to correct the EPG problems as they need to be correct for add the reminders.

As per our standards, Channels C is best. They should telecast some classical stuff as well in order to become a complete musical channel.

Sri Lanka Bharti mobile launch pushed to September

March 11, 2008 (LBO) – Bharti Airtel Lanka, a subsidiary of India's Bharti Airtel, said it had pushed back the launch of its mobile service in Sri Lanka to September this year from an original target of March.

The firm Tuesday signed a deal with the investment promotion agency, Board of Investment, to spend half its planned $200mn investment in the island to set up a network of transmission towers.

Investment promotion minister Sarath Amunugama said at the signing ceremony that Bharti had faced difficulties in getting approvals for its towers from local authorities and sharing towers with other operators.

Company officials present at the ceremony declined to give specific reasons for the delayed launch.

Amali Nanayakkara, chief executive of Bharti Airtel Lanka, said they want to launch their mobile phone operation only when they were sure they had the right infrastructure to give customers the desired quality of service.

She said they had not faced any rejections from the authorities or rival operators.

"Sharing towers is a new concept for existing operators. It also depends on whether space is available and their own expansion plans."

She said the firm was willing to share the own network they were setting up, but did not reveal how many towers Bharti, the fifth player in the island's mobile sector planned to build.

Olof Haag, chairman and country head, Bharti Airtel Lanka, said their original plan to launch in March had been "tentative" and proved to be "over-ambitious."

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission had allocated Bharti the frequencies required for the mobile service, he said.

Haag was quoted in a Bharti statement as saying that infrastructure to be set up covered radio communication towers, generators and shelters.

"(This) will also resource other players who may opt to employ our infrastructure in deploying their services in the future as well."

Bharti Airtel Lanka last September announced a 150 million dollar alliance with China's Huawei Technologies Co. to build and manage its mobile network.

Sri Lanka's 7.5 mobile market is dominated by Dialog Telekom, a unit of Telekom Malaysia, which has about 60 percent market share.

The rest is shared between Mobitel, a unit of Sri Lanka Telecom, Tigo, a part of Millicom International Cellular and Hutchison Telecom.

no
you must be in Dialog coverage area !!

TechnoGuy Sri Lanka said...

@ Lanka Media
This LKR 300/= subscription is to watch TV over GPRS/3G on Dialog Mobile using their own MyTV service. MyTV is only available on Dialog networks.

And if you do not subscribe for the TV you can still watch it, but you will be charged fully for the amount of data you download when viewing.

If you watch TV a lot on your phone, this package IS worth the price.

Mobitel will also start also a TV streaming service, once SLT IPTV is launched.
