MPEG4 Ready!

According to reports being received it seems that Dialog TV are gearing themselves up for MPEG4 encoding. This maybe the reason why TP4 was off air for the past few days. This will certainly improve picture quality unless Dialog decides to cram their transponders with channels.

Rumors are afloat that two HD channels may be available. We are unable to confirm any of this.

Anyone who has further news on these is requested to comment. Please keep us updated on the latest on Dialog TV as the days progress.

Updated @ 26th Feb 2008 - 5:05pm
According to the above report it seems that Dialog TV management have still not decided on how to replace existing MPEG2 Decoders. The best decision would be to replace them free. They will minimize losses by carrying out a free replacement now instead of doing it when they have about 100,000 subscribers. Anyway going MPEG4 is cost saver for Dialog on the long run as they can now add now more channels per transponder.

Providing HD channels, it’s a great idea :) Also if you can add more American channels like MTV, FOX, SHOWTIME etc we are more than happy to watch.

yakuza said...

@tharu

i think they will have to provide new decoders to the old customers. not sure

TechnoGuy Sri Lanka said...

@ Cisco 800
Showtime is not available in Asia. Fox channels we can get are only those run in Asia, not USA. And MTV channels we can get are those from India and/or Asia.

USA channels do not serve to Asia directly in most cases. They create seperate Asian/Indian branches to serve countries in this region.

Also, USA and European channels will be expensive to relay in Sri Lanka.

HD channels in Asia at the moment include Nat Geo and Discovery Channel. But more may be available. Test feeds of STAR World and STAR Movies in HD can also be found on their satellite, but are not officially available as of now.

Soon we can expect HD to develop in Asia, IF networks like Dialog offer the service.

Now the problem is that if Dialog has not chosen a suitable decoder yet, then they will take time to chose one and order, and then even more time for production. We may have to wait a long time.

But if HD and more quality entertainment is at the end of the tunnel, then I am willing to wait the entire ride.

riky said...

Its not that they havent identified a decorder, they have,The problem is how they are going to issue it to the exsisting subscribers, that is the thing that mught cause delays. And as for bigtv india dialog doesnt have to go for a order of 5 million or so boxes and 100,000 will do for some time.

The two HDTV channels are not a rumor its defeneitLY in the pipeline and as for FOX,Fox crime is a defeneite and they are expecting some further FOX channels in asia in due course.

MPEG4 doesn't necessarily mean better quality. Broadcasters tend to encode in order to compress data.

Author said...

Oh also HD cannot be viewed on a standard definition set top box so in order for Dialog to provide HD programming the end user will need to upgrade to a HD receiver and HD TV all costs related to the end user and not the broadcaster/provider.

yakuza said...

@hilal
do you mean we have to buy our own decoders? i don't think so

Tharu said...

@ Yakuza

Yes I too think they will have to provide the old customers with new MPEG4 decoders.. BUt I'm sure they won't do it for free..

If they ever going to introduce HD channels, prbably they'll be included to a new higher pakcage.

Author said...

I work for one of North America's leading HD providers. Anyone wanting to upgrade to HD has to purchase or rent a HD receiver a standard definition receiver cannot receive HD signals. The providers here include a $12.99/month rental or you can purchase outright for $600

sonik said...

HD huh?... thats interesting.... there are about two free HD channels available, LUXE TV is one of them on asiasat2. as a customer though, im not going to get too excited about this development, as dtv has not been able to give proper quality service using SD technology. True enough, if this happens, it will take Sri Lanka one step higher in the world of technology. But, i wonder....

riky said...

The proposed MPEG-4 boxes will have the HDTV option. Its hard decide on what pricing they would offer the boxes at as they are looking at several options.

Cant really say that without even running a trial.

Just because we are small doesn't mean we shouldn't at least try it.

People said similar things when DTH, ADSL, 3G first launched in SL. But now they've kicked in fairly well havent they?

alf said...

AGREED,BUT THE COST FACTOR WILL REMAIN WHEN YOU CATER TO A SMALL SUBSCRIBER BASE,TO GET THE FULL REWARD IN PRICING & QUALITY I THINK THE NUMBER OF END USERS SHOULD INCREASE CONSIDERABLY.

WHAT HAPPEND TO YOUR DISH CONNECTION?

Paranoid said...

It's good if we can get the decoder replaced FOC.

And I heard that the DTV decoder has more features than the old CBNSat decoder. Is that true?

I have two connections from CBNSat and If I have to pay for the new decoder, I'll have no option but to use the old one..

And unlike now, I had to pay around 16K each for my connections.. They didn't give me a discount when I got the second connection.

hope we get the old decoders replaced FOC...

DONT GET CONFUSED WITH ALL THIS TECHNO TALK.

Hey guys,
We're talking about improvement of pay tv industry in Sri Lanka, mostly about in Colombo and suburbs BUT in JAFFNA all most all of the homes using Cable tv.... Colombo is far behind when compare with Jaffna. AMAZING ISN'T IT?

Dissatisfied Customer said...

Hey All,

Is anyone unhappy with DTV service? Cos I am and I would like to see who else is unhappy with their service...i have been waiting for them to give me a better service but I see no improvement and im not only talking about the regularly scrambled channels....i think we can get Mr. Nushad Perera (CEO of DTV) to read this and maybe make some improvements!!cos its pissing me off and im actually thinking of disconnecting it! (btw-I know this has nothing to do with HD or whatever but pls share my pain!)

alf said...

DISSATISFIEDCUSTOMER

I AM WITH YOU AS DTV IS BEHAVING LIKE INFANTS AND PEOPLE WHO DOESNT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT DTH (LIKE ROMESH ANTHONY) IS SCREWING UP THE INNOCENT SUBSCRIBERS.

THE BEST OPTIN AVAILABLE AT PRESENT IS LBN AND LOT OF PEOPLE WILL MOVE TO IT IF THEY HAVE PROPER COVERAGE.SINCE THERE ISN"T A PROPER COMPETITOR,THAT MUTT ROMESH ANTHONY WHO IS A ARROGANT PIG LIKE PIRAPAKARAN IS DESTROYING WHAT CBNSAT BUILT UP,SO ITS TIME DTV GET COMPENTANT PEOPLE AND IMPROVE THEIR SERVICES WHILE GIVING A FAIR DEAL TO THE SUBSCRIBERS.

Dissatisfied Customer said...

Who is Romesh Anthony??

alf said...

DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER.

HE IS THE PERSON WHO GAVE A INTERVIEW TO OUR BLOG ADMIN AND TALKED ALL SHIT AND HE SAID HE WOULD DELIGHT THE CUSTOMERS AND NOW HE HAS MADE THEM CRY.HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE THE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER THEN AND I DONT KNOW WHAT HE IS THERE NOW.

I AM NOT SURE WHETHER HE IS STILL THERE (I THINK AMD TOLD SOMETIME BACK HE IS STILL THERE)

Dissatisfied Customer said...

oh ok...well listen to my experience....since this blog is 'intended for Dialog TV customers....to tell the world about any problems in their service...etc etc....

I got it in Jan...was told it would be installed in 10 days...took more than 10 days!THEN..they did not send me the prgrame guide inspite of me calling 4 times. #rd call they said it was posted on 7th Feb..16th Feb I still had not received it. Spoke to Nushad Perera and complained. The programe guide came thru special delivery on 17th Feb!!One week later we get another program guide..for February!!It was 21st Feb and no guide for March except 2 for Feb!!I called Dialog TV cust serv. & complained..i got the answer 'im afraid its delayed and thats the reality!!'Fantastic customer service I must say!!!They said first month rental and connection is free...and i get a bill with the connection fee in the firts month!!..called..they sorted it out and said there was a mistake and i dont have to pay!...now I have a reminder!!what next???disconnection?????this is on top of all the scrambled channels!!!what is this service???its like a punishment to me!!and torture!we are paying for something which is not working half the time and then when u call for information they say their crap customer service is the reality!!!i nevfer thought DTV would be this bad compared to how good Dialog mobile is!These guys need some aggressive competition from another service provider!

alf said...

DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER

YOU ARE ON THE DOT,THEY ARE ACTING LIKE LORDS BECAUSE THERE IS NO PROPER COMPETETION.LBN IS FAR BETTER IN PRICING AND SIMILIAR IN QUALITY AND QUANTITY BUT THEIR PENETRATION IS LIMITED,SO LORD ANTHONY AND HIS CLICK DOESNT CARE ABOUT THE SERVICE,SUBSCRIBER OR THE COST AS THE MUTT KNOW THAT THESE POOR PEOPLE HAS TO HANG ON.

THERE ARE NUMEROUS AND UNENDING PROBLEMS WITH THEIR BILLING AND IN ACTIVATION OF SERVICE AND SET PLANS,THE CS STAFF TRY TO TALK WITH AN ACCENT AND THEY THINK THAT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN GETTING THE THING DONE FOR THE SUBSCRIBERS AND THESE CS GUYS ARE ILL INFORMED AND DOESNT KNOW A SHIT ABOUT HOW TO SERVE THE CUSTOMERS.

I AM SURE NUSHAD PERERA DOESNT KNOW ANY OF THESE THINGS AND THIS MOTTA ANTHONY AND THE CLAN WHO ARE BELOW NUSHAD ARE HIDING FACTS FROM HIM FOR THEIR OWN SURVIVAL,UNTILL THIS IS PUT IN PLACE "DTV" WILL BE LIKE THE MENATL HOSPITAL AT ANGODA.

From recent comments I can see how much Customer Service impacts the pay TV industry. The company I work for here in Canada invests more money into training customer service agents than improving existing technology. In this industry every competitor can price match and the market becomes extremely competitive the only proven method to improve subscriber base is to have excellent service and to never keep the consumer in the dark.

Christo

This will be the first and the last time I will be ackowledging ur existence!
READ my post carefully! I have said I am considering disconnecting! However, since I have paid a non refundable connection fee I am not stupid to get it disconnected without atleast getting my moneys worth!
As for getting out of this blogg!..is it ur blogg???? I believe ur not the author and READ again what the intention of this blog is! its for customers who are satisfied AS WELL as dissatisfied!if u r so satisfied why dont u go watch some DTV without throwing abuse at 2 ppl who are merely exchanging opinions! No one was talking to you anyway!!

And as for Alf...I think u should just ignore these 2 losers!

TechnoGuy Sri Lanka said...

As I see it, Dissatisfied Customer has some good points about Dialog's weaknesses.

Unfortunately the vandals pounce on him and his ideas are muted.

Our friendly neighbourhood vandal now has another opposing extremist to cause havoc. Aliases?

@ Nalin
I never knew that there are Cable TV networks in Jaffna. Could you provide more information (on the main TV Radio Sri Lanka blog, not this blog).

Dissatisfied Customer said...

Hey Hilal,

I so agree with you! From a consumers point of view what makes me go back to any service provider whether it be mobile or DTH or anything...it is the level of customer service/after sales care I receive!I was working for SKY TV as well as a mobile telecommunication company in London a few years back and agree that they spend a lot of time & money on training and im surprised at the way the DTV CS agents handled the calls! If u compare that with Dialog mobile they are far better and I was told they use the same call centre for DTV as well but the CS guys are still undergoing training apparently!Unfortunately the consumers in Sri Lanka do not demand and in my opinion are not aware of their rights as a consumer to go and demand for better service.

Dissatisfied Customer said...

Hi Technoguy Sri Lanka

Dissatisfied customer is a 'she'

Author said...

Yup. We just launched Home phone service via the existing cable infrastructure not to mention broadband internet at 18Mbps/downloads. We have 1600 customer service agents working at any given time, with 500 team leaders and 100 managers over looking performance of our customer service agents that too at just 1 call center. Can you imagine what payroll is like for just that crew? It paid off because the home phone service registered 1 million users just last week in a span of 6 months. The competitors were brushed aside by good service, reliability and honesty.

Dissatisfied Customer said...

To Hilal,

Well that kind of service still remains a dream to me!I hope one day soon it will become reality in SL....and this is just DTV we are talking about...i dont even wanna start about the rest!....lol

Dissatisfied Customer said...

To the author or to anyone can shed some light on this...

Do you know if in future we can have the DTV program guide available on the internet?....Wouldn't it be easier and more cheaper even for DTV?Saves paper as well :-)!Not to mention postage and reduce contribution to waste!!

sonik said...

got to agree with "dissatisfied customer" about the dtv customer care thing. their not trained properly, especially when it comes to the technology, and they sometimes dont know how to handle a customer, let alone a situation. and on the whole the whole dtv operation is a bit amateurish. i noticed this on the day they installed my connection last year. i hope they improve.

on another note, im amazed to see idiots who comment on this blog who dont understand the concept of value for money....

compared to Dialog GSM the DTV CC is a shit. USELESS CC EVER !!!

DTV SHOULD DEFINITELY GIVE THEM A GOOD KNOWLEDGE AND UPDATE THEIR SELFS AS THEY DONT KNOW EVEN SOME BASIC THINGS THAT WE KNOW !!

THIS IS A DIFFERANT KIND OF COMMISSION,THE DTV SALES STAFF ARE ENTITLED TO A COMMISSION OTHER THAN THE SALARY AND THAT IS THEIR BASIC INCOME,NOW IT SEEMS THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE ASKED TO SELL 100 OR 200 CONNECTIONS TO GET THE COMMISSION,IF YOU SELL LESS YOU DONT GET A DIME.

I have to agree with our friendly neighbourhood vandal on this case.

The decoder HAS to be upgraded to decode MPEG-4 media. Viewing MPEG-4 on the current decoder is impossible.

How can we trust information about impossible things from a blogger who didn't know what MPEG is in the first place.

Lets not have false hopes about that idea.
