"Tamil Box Office" launched

Before we commence our first blog post for this year we take this opportunity once again to wish our valued bloggers, the management and staff of Dialog TV "A Happy & Prosperous 2008".

On the 1st of January Dialog TV launched the replacement for SRTV known as TBO (Tamil Box Office". This is a commercial free channel that broadcasts Tamil language movies in a format similar to movie channel HBO. As per the information that we are receiving this channel is of Singaporean origin. At present Dialog have already added the EPG for the channel but we are unable to locate a website related to this channel and if anyone of our bloggers find the "TBO" website please email us the address so that we can update this blog.

In other news the Cartoon Network EPG on Dialog TV is wrong since Dialog TV is displaying the Cartoon Network India schedule where as they are now telecasting Cartoon Network Asia. The BBC World EPG is wrong due to an error in calculating Sri Lanka Time. We hope that these are corrected in due course. There are rumors of a move from Nick India to Nick Asia by next week but we are unable to confirm this.

Dialog have decided to charge Rs 50/= after March 31st for the "CiTi HiTz" channel but "CiTi HiTz" was launched by removing "SET SAB" which replaced "Animax". "SET SAB" was available for the higher level packages at no additional cost so asking people who are in the higher level packages to pay an additional Rs 50/= for "CiTi HiTz" is not ethical. All packages that received "Animax" or "SET SAB" should receive "CiTi HiTz" at no additional cost. In addition the Set Plan that contained Star World consisted of SET SAB too for a total cost of Rs 100/=. We request our bloggers who are on Set Plans to inform us whether they continued to pay Rs 100/= even though SET SAB was off air or was the price of the Set Plan reduced due to the discontinuation of SET SAB? We hope that Dialog would be fair in their allocation of CiTi HiTz to the packages and make sure that the packages that received Animax or SET SAB would receive "CiTi HiTz" at no additional cost.

Please keep us updated on the latest on Dialog TV as the days progress.

U.S.A. STARTS CONVERTING ANALOG TELEVISION STATIONS INTO DIGITAL TELEVISION STATIONS.(NEXT SRI LANKA?)

WASHINGTON - Millions of $40 government coupons become available Tuesday to help low-tech television owners buy special converter boxes for older TVs that might not work after the switch to digital broadcasting.

Beginning Feb. 18, 2009, anyone who does not own a digital set and still gets their programming via over-the-air antennas will no longer receive a picture.

That's the day the television industry completes its transition from old-style analog broadcasting to digital.

The converter boxes are expected to cost between $50 and $70 and will be available at most major electronics retail stores. Starting Tuesday, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration will begin accepting requests for two $40 coupons per household to be used toward the purchase of the boxes.

Viewers who have satellite or cable service will not need a box.

To request a coupon, consumers can apply online at http://www.dtv2009.gov starting Tuesday. The government also has set up a 24-hour hotline to take requests, 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009).

Congress, in ordering the transition to digital broadcasting, set aside $1.5 billion for the coupon program, which will fund 33.5 million coupons and other costs.

The giveaway basically works under the honor system.

The first 22 million coupons will go to all households that request them. That includes a residence that gets cable service for one television but has a spare TV that still uses an antenna, for example.

The rest of the coupons, however, are meant only for those who do not subscribe to a pay-television service.

The Nielsen Co. estimates that 14.3 million households, or about 13 percent of the 112.8 million total television households in the nation, rely on over-the-air television broadcasts for programming.

Tony Wilhelm, director of consumer education for NTIA, said the agency expects to have enough coupons to satisfy demand. "We think the high number will be 26 million," he said. "Low end is 10 million."

Members of Congress have criticized both the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Federal Communications Commission for their work on the transition to digital television.

In November, the Government Accountability Office, Congress' investigative arm, released a report that concluded there is "no comprehensive plan" for the transition.

Most of the concern rests with public education campaigns. While Congress allocated $1.5 billion for the coupon program, only $5 million was for education. The Association for Public Television Stations reported in September that 51 percent of participants surveyed were unaware that the transition was taking place.

Since then, the broadcast industry has announced a voluntary public education campaign. The FCC is circulating a plan among commissioners that would make public education efforts by broadcasters mandatory.

Congress ordered the transition to digital broadcasting to make more efficient use of the publicly owned airwaves.

On Jan. 24, the FCC will auction off the spectrum currently used for analog television. That portion of the airwaves will be sold to wireless providers and is expected to bring in as much as $15billion. A portion of the spectrum will also be dedicated for use by emergency responders.

@ Thilini
The plans for USA to upgrade were made years ago and a large number of stations have already gone Digital. Now that the coupons are released the broadcasters can shut down Analog operations once and for all.

@ NadineYunoki

I agree: At the end of the day the mess is Nick India. Cartoon Network all over the world has the same standard programming, so except for the Hindi ads there is less problems for us with CN India. Most of the Hindi programs were pushed over to Pogo.

But I'm happy that Dialog is listening to us and introducing Nick Asia. I'm sure it will be a grea change from the Indian version. First of all the Japanese programs will be in English, if they are there at all. Just hope there will not anything in Chinese, etc.

And its good that Pogo is still there because then we won't forget the Indian programming.

And we still might get Animax back with the TP4 next month (or later).

@ Rupavahini and Lanka Info
Is Dialog planning to change other channels also to Asian feeds. Like STAR World, Travel and Living.

@ Thilini
Sri Lanka will learn a lesson when companies stop manufacturing Analog tuner in 2015.

Why can't we take a step forward?

One major reason is that there is a very large amount of bandwidth given to television and radio in Sri Lanka.

Developed countries such as UK and USA give limited bandwidth for TV and Radio, so less channels can be broadcasted. Therefore Digital is a great improvement for them. It allows them to squeeze in a large number of channels in to the limited broadcast space.

Sri Lankan broadcasters and the government won't wake up until we run out of bandwidth, with more TV, Radio and Wireless Services popping up.

No new installations since last November 31st,Thr are around 350 pending new connections to install.

If Cartoon Network India is to return, then CN Asia will be removed. There is minimal chance Dialog TV will keep both together, because that will be considered a waste of transponder space.

Now that CN Asia is here, maybe it should stay.

Just one thing: Get Nick Asia soon! Nick Asia definitely has some better and newer programmes than Nick India.

kavanr said...

I hope DTV selects the Asia feed rather than the India feed for all of the english channels, since the Indian channels switch too often to hindi advertising programs.

Such a switch will also give DTV an marketing advantage over Indian
Satellite packages such as from DishTV

Also does anyone know details about DTV dishes which are 2 times the diameter of the usual. DTV installed such a large dish for a neighbour for no extra cost.

I posted about this long ago in the Comet forum (I was a Comet customer for 7years btw!)

But some of the seasoned bloggers responded that some providers like Discovery, Nat Geo, History only allow Indian feed to Indian-Subcontinent-Area broadcasters. But then again, its upto debate if Star Movies, AXN & Cartoon Network can allow exactly the opposite.

I would be good to debate this topic again, as bottom line - if we can get the Asian feed, or better yet a European Feed of some infotainment channels - it'll go a long way in enhancing our program bouquet and viewing pleasure

"Discovery, Nat Geo, History only allow Indian feed to Indian-Subcontinent-Area broadcasters."

Yep i think so too. This maybe done cuz they have programes more suited to the Indian/Asian culture & tastes ?

Hope we can have the Asian feed of VH1 someday, if there is such a feed, im not sure. Or why not take it off & replace it wih Channel V International.

Why DIALOG TV not giving any Hindu religious channel in their line up?

Are they discriminate Hindu people?

They have Buddhist, Islam & Christian channels. But NO Hindu religious channel.

DIALOG Tv should explain for this.

TechnoGuy Sri Lanka said...

@ N300
Yes, I got the January Guide. Just after Christmas last year.

@ Star
I don't think there is any discrimination going on.

If you go through the events of the last few months you will see that Dialog will soon launch another new transponder. Then a Hindu religious channels is likely to be added.

For now it is not being added because of lack of transponder space.

Islam channel was added mainly for Ramazan season and now is permanent. Maybe Hindu channel will be launched for Thai Pongal.

As Dialog has a channels limit on its equipment as 18 per transponder, Dialog must be using the fourth transponder equipment to add this channel.

When the fourth transponder is working, the channel will be moved to that.

Thanks a lot to Lanka Info and Rupavahini for the information they give us.
