Two years since that fateful day

Exactly two years ago when Dialog TV was known as CBNsat the entire station was abruptly shutdown at approximately between 9pm and 9:15pm on June 6th while many of its users were using the service. The shutdown resulted in a court battle that lasted almost 6 months after which the company was taken over by mobile operator Dialog Telekom.

Now many who condemned and called the service "clandestine" are now benefiting in various ways due to the service and are themselves using the service and are benefiting from the previous management whom they portrayed as traitors.

After the take over by Dialog there have been many positives and negatives. We take this opportunity to thank the previous management headed by Mr. Muhunthan Canagey, the management of Dialog Telekom, the Dialog TV staff who originated at CBNsat, the subscribers who so valiantly fought for the resumption of this service and also to Dialog TV Subscribers Unite who did an invaluable job of raising subscriber concerns.

Please keep us updated on the latest on Dialog TV as the days progress.

  6. DTV will definitely feel the heat of the competition. They will have to stop all their unethical business practises.

All these time they had the monopoly. Now onwards they will think twise before they do high handed changes without informing customers.

All you need to have is SLT broad band connectiona and set top box to have IPTV connection. If the facilities and channells are good and quality is OK most of the DTV customers will gradually go for IPTV. and I will definitely one of them.....

So we will wait and see. Den thamai thithayage waare...

will rather go with something <=rs. 3000 from slt

DTV TALK BIG BUT ALL THEY WANT IS MONEY AND MONEY AND MONEY AT THE EXPENSE OF CUSTOMERS. IF THEY ARE NOT GOING TO IMPROVE GOD SAVE DTV.....

So..Almost all the channells of DTV are available in SLT IPTV.

If rates are reasonable and qualtiy is ok there is no reason why not to consider IPTV as inital investment will on set top box if ADSL line is already available.

So SLT IPTV is going to be very attractive for ADSL customers..

  14. Disadvantages of IPTV:

IPTV is based on the Internet Protocol, it is sensitive to packet loss and delays if the IPTV connection is not fast enough and it also does NOT support HDTV.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It is not ethical for us to discuss SLT IPTV in DTV blog. But we cant help discussing same. DTV customers are so frustrated about DTV handling of Customer affairs that they will see SLT IPTV as a welocome relief and very sound way out.

If DTV wants to retain their existing customers and attract more customers, they should revise their marketing strategies accordingly.

If they are going to pursue the same old tactics, it will be a natural death for DTV and Nushad and also for his idiotic management pals.

    ReplyDelete
  16. the thing dtv has to understand is that they lost the dth monopoly. there are other service providers which the customers can turn to. such as
LBN, DISHTV, TATASKY if i'm correct now can subscribe from sri lanka

they may not loose the current customer base, because of the amount we already had paid for the hardware etc..

but to attract new customers they would have to be more realistic with there packages.

    just my idea..........

IF IPTV enter to the market with competitive technology, Competitive price & competitive channel list we are definitely shifting to IPTV. HDTV is not a big issue.

DTV had to treat customers well, had to use the technology properly, efficiently.

DTV must stop forcefully charging fee for channels like City Shit.

If DTV accept these faults & do accessory actions before IPTV's launch, my self & most of CBNSat Customers will say GOODBYE DTV!!!!

  26. Basic requirement for IPTV:
    • SLT Broadband (ADSL) Connection
    • Set Top Box

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lanka Info

Dont lie machang,HDTV may be activated on SLT IPTV on launch itself. And connections only for coporate purposes is the trial which is running at the moment and they are even testing in households around Havelock Town area (You have just mentioned what the SLT customer care and Wiki says on the Pkts etc).IPTV will be available for all around July and Mr.Thusha Weerasuriya (Former Vice President JKH Business systems) is the head of IT.

Yes,DVBT was to be launched at the exibition and the box was to be sold for around Rs.2500/-,But its not going to happen as the set of boxes (around 500- 1000) brought for the purpose has been already snatched by the people in the media ministry,TRC and such other connected institutions. So we will have to wait for the next lot.

The intial plan of SLT is to issue the box free to capture the market and i am unable to confirm about the rentals at present.

    Why IPTV ?

Consumers always want more and higher quality. Nowadays most of TV are analog with one way data transmission and limited channel. IPTV provides all digital, two way connected, unlimited channels, integrated(DRV,HDTV,PIPs, VoD) and personalized TV. IPTV enhances the TV offer and delivers in a new way to provide better experience to watch TV in a simple, personalized and in a advanced way.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If the intial cost is only 2,500/- for the set top box, from SLT ADSL customers, there will be huge demand for SLT IPTV as it is very affordable for most of the people.

My guess is that SLT will definitely price their packages below DTV packages to attract new customers and also to capture DTV customers.

And if it happen to be a SLT customer they will provide some discount as they are already paying rentals for Telephone and ADSL.(This is only a assumption)

DTV plans for customer expansions up to 500,000 within next three four years will experience serious setback with this development.

We all know that they are still experiencing losses with present customer base. If they want to improve their customer base and have profit, now there is no other way other than becoming competitive in the market.

For that DTV have to do so many thing very quickly. To find out what they have to do, no need do do researches. Just read the DTVBLOGS of past few months do whatever necessary.

Otherwise GOD SAVE DTV and ITS MANAGEMENT

    ReplyDelete
  29. hsj

SLT looking at giving IPTV box free of charge and thats the stand at the moment so you may have to pay for the ADSL connection if you dont have one,but i can tell that their plan at the moment is to issue it free.

The 2500/- i was refering to is the DVBT box(The pilot project which DTV has been running to conver terestrial analog channels into digital).

  35. Thanks Kalu,

if the DVB-T decoder is 2500/- its fully worth- as it is about the same or slightly more than a TV booster.

There are USB type DVB-T decoders with a small antenna and remote provided- was around Rs.4-6000 in Singapore. can be used view TV on a laptop or a desktop PC. can also record onto the hard disk when you press the pause button on remote.(this function is available on high end DVRs and Plasma/LCD Tvs. There was a recent Advertisement on Sunday Times (Hit Ad classified)for such USB devises at 6000/- so if its available for 2,500/- (even if not the USB type) its fully worth as you don't different antennas (UHF & VHF)turned to different directions to get different channels .

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lanka Info,

The initial period you are talking about cannot be longer more than one or two months.
Because SLT have to invest huge sume of mone for IPTV and also pay monthly rentals in Millions in dollars.
DTV is still unable to make profit after two years with nearly 100,000 customers.

So it will do more good to SLT if they launch IPTV commercially without big delay.

    Kalu....

if set top box is free, then there is only monthly rental(if you have ADSL already ). So why not get there minimum package ( if SLT have one ) check the quality of the channells and service. Many of the DTV customers can do this without leaving DTV and will have ample time to take a decision.

    ReplyDelete
  37. hsj

Yes,Thats their intial plan,I hear that some dealers in in electronics like singer has asked for distribution of connections(Boxes) and SLT is reluctant on this as they have to add a price.

They havent decided on the rental as yet but it will be very competitive and This coporate talk is bullshit and when available fully by July(Their anticipated roll out month) everybody will have the opportunity to watch IPTV.

  42. Can yu use Wi Fi or Wimax instead of ADSL to get IPTV?

IPTV has a huge advantage over Satelite- when it comes to the cost as the provider does not need to lease out Satelite Transponder space by paying a premium. so they can give the service at a very competitive rental. of course they have to pay the content providers like HBO & Sky but so does DTV

    ReplyDelete
  43. I came across an article at Blogsite http://aboutsrilanka.blogspot.com/2008/02/slt-gears-up-to-roll-out-iptv-service.html

which gives details about SLTIPTV. The text is reporduced here for evrybodys information.

"SLT Gears Up To Roll Out an IPTV Service In Sri Lanka- Will It Be Another Day Dream Like SLT WiMax?

SLT Visioncom, a fully owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom will invest hundred million rupees to start an Internet Protocol Tele Vision (IPTV) service in Sri Lanka. IPTV is a method of delivering video content through Internet protocol (IP) rather broadband Internet. IPTV has several advantages over traditional or satellite TV services which are interactive and personalized viewing experience, IPTV based converged services and also video on demand (VOD).

IPTV is said interactive and personalized because it gives some unbelievable facilities that you never expected. Some examples are ability to search for your favourite TV program when you need, search for a particular movie by it's director, watch Sana's career records while you watch a cricket match or even you can change the angle of camera during that match. However some of these facilities are possible with some modern satellite services also.

Another useful feature is Video On Demand (VOD) which allows you to select a missed TV program or a film and watch it at your free time. But most probably it will be much expensive.

IPTV based converged services are the other incentives that you will get through this service. On-Screen Caller ID is an example for these converged services. Actually they are value added services bundled with IPTV service.

Up to now I mentioned about the things out there. But surly this will not be the reality in Sri Lanka. Because broadband Internet is the critical factor for all above mentioned "dreams".

At present SLT's 1.5 Gbps bandwidth is shared among it's 54000 broadband customers and 80 000 dialup users (According to a recent newspaper advertisement, SLT' bandwidth is 1.5 Gbps where a US based files hosting company like Rapidshare has more than 120Gbps bandwidth).

In order to roll out an IPTV service, SLT will be required to upgrade their ADSL system to ADLS 2+ .ADSL has several standards and currently SLT uses ITU G.992.1 (A standard define by International Telecommunication Union) standard which supports only max downstream speed of 12Mbps. An ADSL 2+ system is capable of providing theoretically 24Mbps of downstream service (ITU G.992.1 standard).

SLT office express service is currently offered at 6750 rupees which supports max speed of 2Mbps and if we calculate the cost using these values for an 12Mbps ADSL 2+ service which is suitable for IPTV services, it will cost around 40 000 rupees per month. Which means we can expect a price reduction of normal ADSL services after implementing SLT's IPTV service.

AND " Yoyo " has given following reply to it

First of all I totally disagree with the stated fact that 1.5Gb core network is gonna be a bottleneck.

Since this is international bandwith that is shared. As for IPTV it would be Local Servers & Local Bandwith. Which we've got plenty with a good nation wide (Expandable on Demand) Fiber Optic Network. And plenty of unused bandwidth.

Secondly , as said in the article the requirement for ADSL 2 / 2+ is also not nessecary as with the latest MPEG 4 Decoding Technology you need only 7-8 Mbps for High Definition (HD) Audio & Video delivery and just 2Mbps for DVD Quality Audio & Video Delivery although this may require a far more powerful set top box it is still far more efficient compared to the originally estimated 25Mbps for HD and 8 Mbps for DVD Quality a year or so ago using far less efficient compression such as MPEG - 2.

This easily fits into the bandwidth cap of ADSL as it has a theoritical max of about 8mbps for a short distance and 2 Mbps at a very reasonable distance form the ISP delivery point. It is quiet probable that SLT will use the more newer & powerful set top boxes since it is available.

  54. Ihlam..

There have been some response from DTV to this new development.

Today I contacted them to get CHANNEL C removed from my list of channells as they are going to Charge Rs. 50/- from June 01.

But to my surprise, I was informed that they are going to provide that channell free of charge until further notice. I hav already infromed them to remove the CITIHITS from my list as I dont want to pay extra 50/-. Now they have removed the charge from the bill but still the channell is available.

So this is the effect of the competition. If DTV is going to be reasonable like this I dont see why cant they rectify the rest of the mistakes they have commited during last two years.

If they do that, they do not have to do any marketing to add customers. The existing 100,000 customers will at least bring one more customer to them.

That is the type of understanding and mutual relationship DTV should have with its customers. Nt like now The arrogant - stupid and devil may care attitude - towards customers needs will take them nowhere.

Still they are not too late. and DTV dont forget, Better late than never...

    ReplyDelete
  55. DTV is sure to give SLT IPTV real competition. We have to wait for the right time. The current DTV customer service is exactly like DIALOG GSM was a few years ago ( anyone remember ), & their service like DIALOG was those days. But look how Dialog came up in the face of competition with 3 other providers at that time. So it will be the same for DTV too.

    ReplyDelete
  56. THE BOOTOM LINE IS THAT WE WANT DTV AND WE LOVE IT. BUT NOT THE QUALITY AND SERVICE. ALL THESE TALK ABOUT SLTIPTV IN DTV BLOG IS DUE TO BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE OF DTV.

IF DTV IS INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND THAT AND CORRECT THEIR WRONGS IN THE PAST, I DONT SEE WHY CANT THEY GIVE SLTIPTV RUN FOR THEIR MONEY.

    HSJ..

IT IS GOOD AT LEAST THAT DTV HAVE REACTED POSITVELY TO COMPETITION, NO MATTER HOW SMALL IT IS.

LETS HOPE THAT DTV CONTINUE IN THIS VEIN IN FUTURE..

    ReplyDelete
  57. I got a postcard from SLT about IPTV.
It says "As an ADSL user you are already IPTV ready".

    Competition is always good.

  58. IPTV is different from Pay tv
    It has capability to deliver
    Video On Demand
    Games on Demand
    Time Shifted TV
    Video Calls
    interactive services
    Transactional Services..
    Other than Basic Live TV
Another feature is that the IPTV system enables La Carte Channel Selection( Customer can choose his set of channels without paying for unnecessary non waching channels in standard package lists)

Some IPTV platforms enable Personalised Tv for customers.

IPTv is a not only broadcasting but enables multicast and unicast services of contents.

therefore IPTV is a next generation technology which has lot of creative services other than live TV

  66. I also agree with Kumara. We have paid lot of money to DTV for the connection. So it is not easy for us to forget that money and go for new service provider suddenly.

And if DTV is going to improve services and provide new features through new set top box, it worth giving a try.

And if DTV dont improve channell quality and their service, then there is SLTIPTV which could be considered.

But our first option is always DTV. That is why we all are blogging here and dicusssing various issues. DTV channells have given lot of enjoyment and have expanded our knowledge during past years, even with all shortcomings in their service.

    ILHAM..

DTV package price is not practical and most of the set plans are useless. With this weakness they cannot attract common people who are struggling to meet ends with todays high cost of living.

So it is good suggestion that should be condsidered by DTV( to revise package structure to make them more attractive to average people and also to meet competition from SLTIPTV.

    Dialog TV..

Any idea about the price of the MPEG$ set top box..

A-la-carte with IPTV served by SLT
Fascinating possibilities with Internet Protocol TV
    By Steve A. Morrell

Chief Executive Officer, SLT VisionCom (Pvt) Ltd., Thusha Weerasooriya spoke to The Sunday Island on the SLT TV event, which unfolds today at the BMICH.

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) means that customers could command their TV programmes. This means not merely select a film or programme but, say you get back home after work and was late to catch the 6 O’clock news, all you need do is switch to rewind mode and you would be watching the news programme you missed.

Not quite like a video film you borrowed, but this will be accessible from the TV station beamed to each home as accessed.

Weerasooriya said possibilities were varied and could end only when one’s imagination runs out.

What would you need to have such functions up and running?

An (SLT) ADSL connection, (An SLT telephone line), and SLT would do the rest. You would also have to instal a decoder. Nothing comes free of course, and whatever options you choose you would have to pay. And that’s when the A-la-carte option could be applicable.

A-la-carte would mean just this, say for instance you would want to watch a selected film, you order it and pay for what you watch. That’s it.

You would have wide choices to choose. Not only films, but many programmes aired from many parts of the world.

And how much would that cost?

"At this point of time my answer is ‘Cannot say’ because whatever cost factors to be determined are still in an inconclusive stage and still to be finalized. Some are high cost factors, applicable only to those who demand more costly options", the CEO explained.

IPTV could match up to or surpass already existing providers. True or false?

True. What you would accept is that services to be show-cased today are wire based protocols and latitude of applications are profuse and varied.

"The competition we have use radio air ways, and provision of such facilities would cost enormous sums of money just to set up a home facility. I cannot see any organization operating presently in Sri Lanka spending that kind of money", he said.

    You’re sure of that?

"Absolutely. As we are on this aspect of what we would do today at the BMICH, let me also say that what I’m to tell you now will be possibilities for the future. Take education. IPTV would facilitate the concept of distant education. I can tell you exactly how this could be done, but that would be a long dissertation on technicalities and not really relevant at this point of time, but such possibilities do exist. And Naturally extremely convenient".

The stock market is another. Say you missed the bourse and comments on share transactions and so forth. All you need do is switch on, switch to re-call, or rewind mode, and you will have the information you need, Weerasooriya explained.

The IPTV platform also provides interactive TV which is also an extension of the al-la-carte menu, linking possibilities choices of programmes and more so programme content.

What would be certain is good quality and user satisfaction?

"All our projections would not be on view today but quite substantial pointers could be viewed to provoke sufficient end user enquiry for better lateral exposure", he said.

  75. @KILLER,
From your question I found one thing, many thinks watching IPTV is something to do with ADSL speed and download.
Very clearly understand, IPTV just need ASDL service, not the package you choose. Moreover, watching IPTV will not add any byte to your ADSL quota. IPTV totally in different spectrum within the ADSL connection. It will use the full bandwidth of the wire apart from Internet and voice service.
IPTV is third entity in the SLT telephone wire.

  76. Sudhar, Thanks for your information, Any body participate today exb. at BMICH, I New things pls inform to us,

    ReplyDelete
  77. I went for the BMICH show on Sunday Evening. I got mixed answers to my question as to if IPTV uses a different range of the spectrum of the ADSL connection. Most of those who were presenting in the booths were clueless about the details. But one person who seemed to know said this was the case as told by Sudhar.

    Few Facts I found out.
    You need about 2-3Mbps connection
and they claim that is possible within 4 kms from server IF the copper wire is good. They can test that on your ADSL connection.

    SLT currently charge Rs2250+VAT for 0.5Mbps and Rs6750 for a 2Mbps
for a 2.0Mbps unlimited connection. What will a 3Mbps IPTV connection cost.

Those who subscribe to SLT ADSL know that you see only fraction of those speeds when congested. When IPTV is congested it is probably like Rainfade on DTV

SLT Plans to have about 24-48 hours of Live Lankan TV online so viewers can view programs on demand. That is very useful since you get limited DVR like capability. It uses about
    1GB per hour. (10Gb/3600=2.7Mbps)

Is there an agent for Tatasky in SL?

If someone wants to buy DishTV can get from local dealers for better price other than Satnet.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I went to the exhibition yesterday. They have the demo you get on web, on a big screen, and demo some channels & films as well.

The demo looked great and was without any interuptions (ie. download speed was not a problem during the demo).

There were huge no. of booths, giving the similar demos & showing the capabilities to potential customers.

Like mentioned by some bloggers, they assure that IPTV stream does not interfere with the existing ADSL package or the voice connection, but uses another pipeline within the same cables.

Further, even if you do not have ADSL, they will install it, once you purchase IPTV; ADSL & Internet being a seperate package, which can be obtained if necessary.

According to them the package prices have not been finalized.

Further, Video on Demand, will have an additional price tag, but they indicated for POST PAID packages, it will be probably free (Don't know why?)

Further they indicated, that they are planning to make available Chat & On Line game capabilities plus the internet browing it self (No need for a seperate ADSL package in that case, unless you want to download to computers etc.; my openion)

BUT, all these are for the future. Although I thought the exhibition was to launch IPTV is was not so. They still don't have a launching date.

BUT, the capabilities look factastic. It will be a very tough competition for any of the SAT TV providers, including our beloved Dialog TV.

  87. During demonstrations and exhibitions most of the companies hoodwink customers. No shortcomings are discussed. Only advantages and benifits are displayed. No discussions about cost. So customers get very good first impression about the product. ( Most of the software companies are famous for this )

So we should not judge everything looking at what SLT demonstrated at BMICH. They have ensured that every technical aspect and infrastructure is in perferct condition to impress the customers.

But in actual live scenarios things are not like that. Things go wrong and service providers are not able to maintain perfect condtions to ensure good quality.

And more over what about the cost. If SLT charge 2500+ for .512mbp what will be the cost for 2mbp line.

We have to weigh COST vs FACILITIES and
    compare same with DTV.

For that there is ample time. So till then lets stay cool....

  90. As they told me they are not going to charge antthing for the extra band width offered with IPTV. Also they are not in a position to tell anything about the price factor.

The picture quality is not very great, when monitored in a 42" TV, the image looks heavily blurred. They agreed that would be the standard quality and when HDTV is introduced in the future those HDTV channels will be in high quality.

Also, time shift function is subject to approval by channel providers. They agreed that most of the entertainment channels would not give that facility. Still they are negotiating with the channel providers.

Personally I don't see any big advantage in IPTV over DTV, unless SLT provides everything they promise in their prmotion campaign.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I feel the promo of IPTV was to stop potential customers going to DTV & other providers, until the SLT is properly setup.

They are still not ready to launch, otherwise this would have been a very good oppurtunity to launch IPTV.

I dont think they will be charging highly for the bandwidth, that simply is part of the service they provide, for which they will be charging as per package. This bandwidth does not interfere with other ADSL & Tel facilities, so we should not try to forecast charges based on that.

BUT, as it is based on ADSL, the more users, the more interference unless they are able to gurantee a minimum bandwidth per customer.

Further, as I mentioned earlier, VOD will be charged seperately, reducing the attractiveness of that to us subscribers.

So, like HSJ said, we just have to wait & see. But may have to think twice before jumping, specially if DTV make their package more attractive under the competition.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I have noticed, when the rain starts, the signal goes off, but after some time it comes back irregularly for some time, and then steadies itself.

After that even with the rain, generally good reception continues.

Have the others observed the same?

Is there some auto corrections taking place to stabilize the rain effect?

    ReplyDelete
  122. @css

it has everything to do with the angle of the dtv dish. when the rain interferes with the dtv signal, it might not be raining in your area. the rain must block the line of sight between your dish and the satellite for rain fade to occur. but when the clouds and rain are directly above your dish, then the signal is not affected, as the line of sight between satellite and your dish is relatively clear.

therefore the dtv system is a good rain warning... hehe... as soon as the signal goes out, that means its time to take the clothes in and all......

there is no difference. if there are trees blocking and you still get the signal when its not raining, then the tree/building isnt blocking the siganl. ie, it doesnt affect rain fade.

    @ LANKA INFO

good point. a larger dish would mean the power of the signal bouncing off the dish to the lnb is more. for example, i have a c band system with 6 foot dish, and it never faids during rain!!!. not even if its storming.

but Ku band probably diffracts more easily through rain than c band or something which adds to the rain fade. im not too sure. ku band will always go out depending on how bad the rain is, but the dtv satellites positioning makes it worse.

  133. I think no need to hurry about IPTV. Can't u remember the bad service of SLT. Wired lines are always a mess and i think IPTV will face lots of distrotions. Btw DTV is a sleepng gaint and plannnig to improve its service. New transponder, MP4, new channles.

In the world, satelite tv is the best option and IPTV is a old fashion methid.

Thanks for the rain fade explanations. Like you said, the only good thing about that is the prior warning we get about the upcoming rain. :)

You won’t be able to get service if tall Buildings, Trees, or Mountains block the signals beamed by the satellites. (Especially in Maligawatha Flats/Narhanpitta/Fort/hills side….)
