So whats next now - sneek peeks and suggestions

Well after a few months of work and some delays Dialog TV have finally completed introducing the new channels. During the last few months we have criticized them when they do not get things right and have congratulated them when they got things right. It has to be said that this is the first large expansion that was carried out by this company ever since they commenced operations and just a few months after they recommenced operations following the controversial time period last year.

We would like to say that the Dialog TV team have done a good job in adding channels that were looked forward to by their existing and future subscribers. At present all the channels originally planned for have been introduced and information suggests that one more is one the way. This channel would be a local one operated by Dialog (probably called Neth TV) but we are unable to find any further information. about this. In addition it seems that Dialog TV are now planning for the launch of their fourth transponder and it seems that they are negotiating with some Tamil language channels as well as some of the Fox channels available in this region.

All of this is good but Dialog has to now got to concentrate on other aspects of their operation too such as the following.

1) The fourth transponder should not have too many new channels rather they should make use of this to spread out the channels further in order to further improve the channel quality.
2) A website for Dialog TV that can be accessed using a mobile phone and programme guides should be viewable using the mobile phone too and a better designed website with programming information too for regular internet access with on line payment features, channel blocking features, etc.
3) SMS programme alerts.
4) Add the other local radio stations and television channels.
5) Reduce the price of the secondary decoder and offer a special package for a secondary connection in the same location.
6) A decoder specially for Hi Fi systems at a reasonable price so that people can keep it close to their hi fi systems and do not have to use the decoder connected to the television in order to listen to the radio stations on Dialog TV.
7) Introduce DTS sound to channels that have this feature available.
8) An Electronic Programme Guide that loads faster and allows to view the schedule of another channels without changing channels.
9) Innovative marketing plan that will attract customers and they could also use their existing subscribers also to market connections (as suggested in one of our previous posts).
10) Introduce a DVR that facilitates the recording of one channel while watching another and make it available to their subscribers on an installment basis. This could be done by tying up with an importer of electronic products into the country.
11) Movie on Demand and Pay Per View( for subscribers who want to select a particular channel that belongs to some other package).
12) Update the website regularly.
13) The EPG should be made very accurate and should contain no errors.

These are some of the suggestions that we have added and we believe that our fellow bloggers will further add to this by making their suggestions too.

Please keep us updated on the latest on Dialog TV as the days progress.

You have mention all the important points !

Dear DTV. We need to improve your service ! Pls consider those points.

Why on earth would we need that with the current radio channels? One could listed to the radio on the HiFi set instead of connecting the decoder and listening through that.

  3. Thank you admin,
some times I think we all blogers watching Dialog tv for 24 hours. nothing special in office or home. thats because you. You gave us that opportunity.

    Keep going and keep watching
    we are with You...

As far as we know there are no any more future relationship with Assest media network (pvt) Ltd and dialog television (Pvt) Ltd.

OgilyAction Guys doesnt know about star Plus. they tell us it is a 'movie channel' what a funny.

  4. @ Amaris

This would benefit customers in the outstations as well as in some parts of Colombo, as the outstation frequencies sometimes have a lot of disturbance and are not clearly audible too. Besides the quality would be much better when its comes through DTV, since its a sat feed as opposed to conventional analog feed with the normal antenna we have on our hi-fi sets.

  5. 1st of all the C/Care team should be given an engineering lesson from the technical team. Some C/C agents dont even know what TRANSPONDER is !

    ReplyDelete
  6. The radio channels are broadcast in stereo mode.I dont think there is any difference between a sat feed and what we capture with normal antenna.

By the way with the the current head end equipment that dialog have they cant include more than 18 channels per transponder. Otherwise we would have to suffer further quality loss as i am sure dialog would have jammed in more channels per transponder. The lack of quality is obivious when you watch STAR CRICKET. If somebody has a access to a LBN connection or even a COMET connection just compare the quality specialy when the IND vs ENG test match is on

  7. they Should use ASIA or DSTV feed for NGC Discovery, Animal Planet and History. The USLESS INDIA feed has nothing BUT ADS and old PROGRAMS .

Get good feed for these channels

  8. @ CABLE

My Star cricket was fine yesterday during the match. Hadnt any problems and it was clear like glass!

Yes the radio channels are Stereo, but when u compare the feeds the DTV feed dosent have any disturbance at all, this may not be that noticiable in Colombo, but i have experienced a a big difference in some rural areas.

    ReplyDelete
  9. @amd

As i said you should compare the signal. Its nothing to do with the "clearness" of the channel. What i get is also clear but i wont use the cristal to describe it the pictures are not as well defined as it can be.I used to have a comet connection and i can say that star world had better quality on comet than what is available in DTV. I dont know how to explain it other than showing it to you but most of the channels in DTV dosent have depth and texture and shapness of pictures i would expect from a DTH service.

FOr me out of all the channels sometimes AXN and History channel have the required quality, texture and richness of colors but this dosent happen all the time. Maybe its a personal preference of mine other people may not be much bothered about it. what do you say guys? especially ppl who had other connections like LBN and COMET before getting on board with DTV

  10. Dear Admin,

What about DAB radio transmissions of Foreign English medium digital radio broadcasts as well?

  11. It seems DTV is going on a Corporate promo... there's a flyer going round our office for staff Rs8950/= for the equipment, + 3months rental to be paid in advance.

Though @cable has a point above (see also my previous posts on that subject), bottom line - DTV for Rs8950/=, taking into account the channels available (now!), its worth it IMHO...

    ReplyDelete
  12. KIDO-CMB,

I forwarded my proposals regarding our local channels to DTV E-mail address yesterday. So can you inform us what's the DTV's response to it, in detail manner?

    ReplyDelete
  13. @cn

I agree with you 53 channels @ 8950 for ppl whh do not live in LBN area is very good. In fact i moved from comet to DTV because i also got this offer of 8950/- + 3 months rental sometime back.

TO think i paid 18,000/- Rs in 1999 to get Comet these comet owners must have made a killing.

When comet was under control of the hettiarachi family they were trying to introduce digital and they were planning to increase the rental to almost 2000/- per month. In addtion to the profit of giving 18 channels at 1500 + VAT they were so greedy that they wanted to increase their profits even further by increasing the rental and putting local ads in AXN ans star world

Dialog appears almost saintly by this comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @forecaster

Hey take it easy, give the man some time. We also have to be reasonable. KIDO-CMB is trying to help us going beyond the call of duty.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @cable,

Funny, I also got Comet in '00 for 19k (I think?), disposed of it early '07 for 10k... : ) But, it was over 7 years of pure cable-TV pleasure, except for a few ghosting issues now n then.

However sentimental reason's apart, after DTV added the Star Bouquet, & until LBN expand or Comet goes digital (in the real world!), I'm rooting for DTV all the way...

He said this is for 900/- & 1400/- package customers. If someone upgraded to these packages before 30th of Septembers they can get Star channels to their packages free of charge.
I asked what happened after 30th of September. He said the management have an idea to add another package like 1600/- and move those star channels to that package.

  21. BSNL launches IPTV in Karnataka

internet protocol television (IPTV) was launched in Bangalore recently and the facility will be available for users from August 15.

About 150 television channels, movies, education from kindergarten, primary and high school students of higher levels, and much more will be available on internet protocol television. Digital quality is another benefit. Service charges are Rs 150 per month plus usage charges, thus giving cable operators a run for their money. A one-time investment includes a set-top box worth Rs 3,950 and installation charges of Rs 889.

Viewers can choose from a choice of English, Hindi and other vernacular films for a price ranging from Rs 10 to up to Rs 150.

Users of this service can watch their favourite programmes at the time of their choice, however, this option is not available now. The project has been supported by CSIR under the triple play broadband technology which is on par with what is available worldwide. The franchisee for broadband here is India Online.

"It will be made available soon. E-education, homework and project assistance for students, music and gaming will also be available soon," said N Ramesh, head of India Online Broadband.

  22. "Upgrade or subscribe before 9/30 and you will get star on 1400 or 900 packages (depending on the allocation)"

I think it was obvious that DTV was going to bring up another higher valued package OR pay-per-view.
So anyone buying DTV on 900 or 1400 packages or upgrading to 900 or 1400 after 10/1 will not get Star network (and what else??).
If I get Star world and Vijay on my 900 now and if I 'upgrade' to 1400 in October - that means I would loose my World and Vijay!!! That sounds crazy 'cos you don't 'upgrade' to loose existing channels but anything is possible with DTV.

H/e, it must be mentioned that DTV allowed 850/- customers to upgrade to 900/- without losing ESPN & POGO.

I personally don't hv a problem whatever it is as if I'm gonna upgrade to 1400 it will be before the world cup on 9/7th :D

  25. Hi guys, need some advice. I still have the old CBN 850/= package. And I could not watch some new channels DialogTV introduced. When I called customer care, one person told me to upgrade it to Dialog 900/= package so that I will get the new channels including ESPN & POGO. Will that be a smart move for me? Will it be worth givingI guess I will only be loosing those 4 HBO channels, Star movies, star cricket, TenSports & NeoSportsPlus, right?

    ReplyDelete
  26. well, im sure we're all pretty happy with the selection of channels introduced on dtv now (Im not talking about the channel pricing).
now dtv needs to add two more transponders to carry their existing load of channels... after all the channels on tp3 were added (all 18) pixxellation is again evident, and goes to show that it is a bandwith problem and not a signal issue. 5 transponders and 11 channels on each of them would probably be good. although we understand that transponders = mega loads of money, if dtv wants to be the no.1 pay telelvision provider in SL, they have to provide a wide choice of channels and industry standard quality.

i hope they are able to offer the best dth service in the region, coz their channel line up now can easily out-do even dishtv or tatasky...

  29. ADMIN,

YOU HAVE DETAILD EVERYTHING THAT DTV SHOULD SORTOUT. BUT DTV SHOULD GIVE TOP PRIORITY TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF EXISTING CHANNELLS.

FOR SOME PEOPLE DTV IS CRYSTAL CLEAR. BUT FOR ME IT IS A REAL MESS. EVEN STAR CRICKET HAS LOT OF PIXELATION. HBO CHANNELLS ARE HORRIBLE AS USUAL.

You forgot to mention about High speed Broadband internet. !!

Who let the dog(Alf) out ??!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. There may be other factors which affect the picture quality except bandwidth. Also I only get signal strength and quality level for old 2 transponders around 59% and for the new one 38% because my cable had to be joined with jacks in 2 places. Yet picture quality is perfect for me.

my post from a preavious thread.

I'm surprised that some people complain about picture quality of DTV because for me it's perfect on my TV.
Fortunately there are features in my Phillips TV called "Pixel Plus (it doubles the pixels to get HDTV like pictures from SDTV sources)" and 100MHZ digital scan. They greatly improve the pictuire quality. I can test the picture with these options enabled/disabled side by side on screen. I think that is the reason I get high quality pictures from DTV.

If you have TVs with these digital technologies, try them they will improve the picture quality.

  32. CBNSCUSTOMER,

MACHANG I THINK YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR ID. BCOZ THERE IS NO MORE CBN. HOW ABOUT DTVSCUSTOMER..
    ONLY JOKING MACHANG..

YOU ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE A GOOD TV WHICH HAS ALL THESE NEW FEATURES. BUT MY ONE IS LG AND ABOUT TWO YEARS OLD. IT DOES NOT HAVE THESE FEATURES. SO WE HAVE TO DEPEND ON DTV TO IMPROVE PICTURE QUALTY.

I HOPE THESE BUGGARS DO IT SONN ..

    ReplyDelete
  33. I hope DTV considers the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) suggestion seriously. A fully integrated DVR changes the TV watching experience enormously.

When Time permits you can watch prerecorded TV programs you are most interested in. When you watch the News you can skip over the news items you are not interested in. Record one while watching another is useful but not essential. Record while watching a prerecorded is needed.

After having used TiVo in USA for few years, I don't like letting the TV schedule govern what I do at anytime.

I maybe able to afford a higher priced package, but remain with the G-900, since I rarely remember to catch the start of a movie. With a DVR I would be willing to pay more to get a better selection of Movies to prerecord and watch. Else DVD Movies are cheap to buy in Lanka.

  39. Do you guys have any idea of as to when the 4th transponder will be switched on. I did have the DSTV (South Africa) package upto June this year. I have been subscribing to this package for the last 4 years. I channel line up on that package was super. They have 10 sports channels (Super Sports 1-9 plus ESPN european feed). All rugby matches (super 14, Tri Nations and Th European cup and also the domestic club matches played in South Africa, Australia and Europe)played around the world were fully covered. All these came at a price. I personally feel what is lacking in Dialog tv package is good coverage of Rugby.

Is there any plan for Broadband internet ?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes, The current rate is Rs 8,000/= per month. About four years ago when we started to subscribe to this package the rate was Rs 6,000/=. Mind even at the moment there are more than 100 peope in this country who subscribe to this package. Now the channel provider has stopped issuing cards due to some people sharing cards through ADSL lines.

    ReplyDelete
  56. @ Your comment on DSTV is very much interesting. I know 8000 per month and the additional cost of setting up a dish is really expensive and out of reach for many but still DSTV is an extremely well organized service with outstanding content.

If you read the previous posts, you will see that there are many die-hard rugby fans here and we are working to bring more rugby in to DTV.

The world cup will be shown on Neo Sports Plus (partially) and also on channel EYE as per reports. (can someone pls elaborate on the EYE factor - is it confirmed and how many matches will be shown?).

I also believe that at least one of the remaining Discovery channels s/b added to the TP4. But I'm not pinning my hopes on having the TP4 anytime soon.
If anything, it might be early 2008.

  57. VISHKID,

WHY DONT YOU SUGGEST TO DTV TO MAKE AVAILABLE NEO SPORT CHANNEL DURING RWC AS THEY DID FOR CRICKET WORLD CUP FOR RS. 200/-

IT WILL BE A BETTER OPTION AND IF THERE IS SUFFICENT INTEREST, DTV WILL DEFINITELY DO IT. SO AS RUGBY FANS IF YOU ALL CAN MAKE A REQUEST IT WILL BE A GOOD OPTION.,

    ReplyDelete
  59. Kumara, I wholeheartedly agree.
In the cricket world cup, even when it was shown on Eye, DTV showed it and made Set MAX available to all for a small fee.

Given the number of rugby fans in SL they will do nicely if they implement the same for Neo Sports Plus during the RWC.

I will write to their suggestions and the subscribers unite. Kido-CMB/Riky, something else for you to take up as well :D

    ReplyDelete
  60. could somebody pl start a poll (as in a previous case) on subscribers in the middle & lower packages who would like to watch rugby world cup (if it's shown on neo+) through ala-carte facility.(pay per view)cos we're not sure whether EYE will show all the matches.

IF YOU HAVE PLANS TO SEE RWC ON EYE CHANNELL THROUGH DTV IT WILL NOT WORK. CAN YOU REMEMBER WHAT DTV DID FOR EYE CHANNELL DURING CRICKET WC. THEY SCRAMBLED THAT CHANNELL.

SO SAME THING WILL HAPPEN TO EYE CHANNELL ON DTV DURING RWC. SO IF YOU HAVE CLEAR RECEPTION THROUGH NORMAL ANTENNA YOU CAN WATCH RWC. OTHERWISE YOU HAVE TO DEPEND ON DTV

I would also like to respectabily request not to add any more channels to existing transponders as it will screw up the quality of channels even further! Why don't DTV give some technical knowledge to their customer support team ?
Today i asked for a secondary connection. She said amazing thing.
You have to buy another Decoder for Rs9000/-& have to pay another rental for that. But you cant watch 2 channels in one time! If the primary decoder changes a channel the other decoder also remains the same channel.
Then I asked, why should i buy another decoder and pay another rental for that?, i can connect the video out to my other TV no?
Then she asked me to wait for a minute while she check it?
Then she said I'm sorry 4 giving wrong information ..

    Isn't this general knowledge ?

  87. DTV has filed a case against the Consumer affairs authority in the supreme court for trying to get involved in their affairs (CAA has said that DTV has no authority to carry out a DTH operation)

Some of these guys never stop and dont know whether some of our friends here have complained to the CAA.

    ReplyDelete
  88. @ Terry,

Yes i heard it on the news yesterday, The CAA will be sorry that they tried to mess with Dialog Telekom.
Those who complained must be thinking that they can play around with DTV like the way they did with CBN SAT!!

  89. Dialog TV invites you to get “Star Struck”

Dialog TV, Sri Lanka’s leading Direct to Home (DTH) service provider, has enlarged its bouquet of channels to its thousands of Sri Lankan viewers with the inclusion of the immensely popular range of Star Channels.

“Star Channels have been long awaited by our diverse and rapidly expanding customer base all over Sri Lanka. 90. Hi Everyone

I could able to visit this blog after long time bcos i had a busy schedule last days.

I'm so disappointed when i saw Alf is ruin my name here.He has mixed-up some ware and I can help him to sort out this misunderstanding !

    Alf :
Have you ever heard about NAT / Proxy ?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation
    http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm

Those links will help you to get a rough idea about it.If you have a basic knoledge about IT you can understand it. Or LST will help you for this

This is the place you got mixed up.
Jesika and myself working in the same office. but different locations. I'm working at IT Dep & jess is in another dep. We are using a same ADSL connection to share Internet to all users.( using a Proxy/NAT server).
so if someone track an IP address, He thinks its the same person bcos of the NAT server have only one real IP.
I think you also tracked us using the IP address and decide we are same one.

I think you got the point.

People wont be smart bcos of their big mouth. Smart people use their brain before using their mouth.
for example: LST, He is a real smart guy !!

    No hard feelings Alf !

But be careful next time before using others real names.

  91. "DTV has filed a case against the Consumer affairs authority in the supreme court for trying to get involved in their affairs"

Well that's rich, given the fact that CAA has the right to get involved in anything that involved consumers :D

But I'm sure the complaint here hv come from none of the 'real' consumers but from the same ppl who were trying to oust CBNSat for their own financial gain.
This type of thing reduces the importance and the respect of CAA and what they should hv done is to penalize DTV for pulling a fast one on real customers using the testing period.

All being said and while condemning this obviously biased take by the CAA - I believe it's only good for customers if the authorities like CAA keep a look on all service providers to ensure that the consumers are not hoodwinked.

  92. @ amd

Must be the same guy Hulugalla who has initiated the conspiracy,They sure are going to have it this time.

    ReplyDelete
  93. @ cbnsatcustomer - do you notice the term "given FOC to this and this package"

So DTV does not consider the star bouquet a part of any package. They consider it as a separate thing from any packages - to be charged and changed as they wish!

The fact that we hv it FOC now does not mean it's a part of our packages ....

    Hmmmm ... interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Vishkid,

CAN YOU REMEMBER THE QUESTION I RAISED IN LAST POST. THAT IS WHETHER DTV CAN TAKE OUT STAR CHANNELLS FROM US. SO ABOVE ARTICLE IN TODAYS DAILY MIRROR PROVIDE A VERY CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE ABOUT DTVS INTENTION.

MAKE NO MISTAKES MY FRIENDS. THEY CAN TAKE AWAY THESE CHANNELLS FROM 1400/- PKG AT ANY TIME. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE FROM DTV THAT THEY WILL NOT DO THAT. SO SOMETIME IN THE COMING DAYS STARRY NIGHT WHICH LOT OF US ARE ENJOYING WILL SUDDENLY BECOME A PITCH DRAK NIGHT.

AND DID YOU ALL NOTICE THAT THERE IS NO MENTION AT ALL ABOUT STAR CRICKET. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN ? HAS NUSHAD PERERA FORGOTTEN STAR CRICKET COMPLETELY ? SURPRISING .. VERY SURPRISING.

MAN... COMING COLOR IS NOT GOOD. MAME KELLA GETA GANIN...

  95. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE AND THIS CLEARLY EXPLAINS WHAT I WAS SAYING TO ALL BLOGGERS HERE.KEEP APART THE THE IP ADDRESS THE LANGUAGE AND GRAMMER SAYS THE ENTIRE STORY.

    THAT DOESNT CHANGE ANYTHING.

  96. kumara

Can they remove channel that we have now. Is there any rights to do that?

We had the same think with ESPN and POGO. but they didnt take it from customers who had it before..
I think DTV will not do a works like that.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Kumara,

I just saw you question of 11th Aug. To view one while recording another requires the SetTopBox have that dual reception capability.

In USA the newer TiVo DVR integrated with the Cable SetTopBox allow that. TiVo is run on a Linux computer, so there are lots of hacks. Search for "Tivo hacks" on Google.

I will probably buy a TiVo for cheap on eBay the next time I can get opportunity to have it brought back to Lanka, so I can hack it.
