Dialog TV takes action against Consumer Affairs Authority

In recent developments Dialog TV has filed action against the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) in the Supreme Court because the CAA have said that Dialog have no authority to carry out a DTH operation. It is kind of interesting to note that the CAA did not take action when the CBNsat subscribers were being deprived of services due to the interferences by vested interests in high places. So we wonder why the CAA is barking now? Or are they barking on behalf of someone else?

The CAA which should be making sure that Dialog TV subscribers and people who receive services from other organizations are not being exploited but instead it is destroying its credibility by getting involved in unnecessary affairs. We are very certain that the CAA is acting on behalf of those vested interests who failed to keep CBNsat shut and it looks like those shadowy figures who were openly mentioned in this blog are now in for the lesson of their life and should be put to shame.

In other news it seems that the 55th Dialog TV channel will be owned and operated by Dialog TV and will be called Neth TV. SRTV made a come back last night after being down for a few days and it seems that the Star Movies EPG has been corrected and we hope that the other EPG's are also sorted out too. According to information received it seems that last night Ten Sports had sound only on one channel and we hope that this is sorted out soon. It looks like Dialog TV is now fine tuning its channels in order to improve their quality.

Please keep us updated on the latest on Dialog TV as the days progress.

Updated (at 10:00am):
Please note that we are unable to find any references to this legal issue except for the fact that it was mentioned in a news report yesterday.
Dialog TV is planning to move channels around soon, that is why if you look at the paper advertisements regarding the new channels, the channel numbers mentioned do not tally with the actual number in the decoder. It is likely that the channels will be moved according to the advertisements in the newspaper.

  3. It's a good thing that Chief Justice is also involved with Buddhist channel. He is the "Pradhana Dayakaya" in that temple. And I read in a newspaper that CJ had told Gota malli to not to destroy young entreprenures businesses again like he did to CBNSat showing Mr.Muhunthan Canagey during that opening ceremony.

  4. RUKMAL,

YOU ARE ASKING ME A DIFFCULT QUESTION. CAN DTV TAKE ANY CHANNELL OUT OF OUR PACKAGE.
TAKING OUT CHANNELLS OUT OF PACKAGES WILL DEPEND ON MANY THINGS.

FOR EXAMPLE WE AS CUSTOMERS BOUGHT PACKAGES AFTER GOING THROUGH THE CHANNELL STRCTURE AND WITH AN IDEA THAT DTV WILL MAKE AVAILABLE THESE CHANNELLS. DTV CANNOT TAKE THOSE CHANNELSS OUT OF ANY PACKAGE SINCE
IT WAS IN THE ORIGINAL PACKAGE.

BUT THEN COMES THE NEXT QUESTION. WHAT ABOUT THE CHANNELLS ADDED LATER. TODAY NUSHAD PERERA HAD TOLD DTV HAS GIVEN US A BONUS ? WHAT DOES IT MEAN . FOR ME IT MEANS IF THEY WANT THEY CAN TAKE IT AWAY.

THEN WHAT ABOUT STAR CRICKET. NUSHAD PERERA HAD PURPOSELY AVOIDED MENTIONING ABOUT IT IN THE NEWS ARTICLE.

Cant they do the chanel testing in the morning? Yersterday at 7.30 to 8.30 PM DTV was doing some technical operation on star world and i could only watch the channel intermittently. Why the HELL does DTV do technical operations at PRIME-TIME? Can they do it say from 1.00 am to 5 .00 am when least number of ppl are watching? I just cant understand the logic of technical upgrades at PRIME TIME

    @ALL

As all the ppl in the blog know iam one of the fierecest critics of DIalog regarding the quality of the cahnnels but yersterday i happend to view star cricket through Dish TV at a freinds house and i can say 100% that DIsh TV IS NOT better than DTV In fact i think DTV quality was marginally better. Discovery Travel and Living was also the same quality in DTV and DishTV. I can vouch for this 100%

I wanted to ask you about the quality of STAR CRICKET yesterday, cuz as u said u were very critical of DTV pic quality. I personally think it was a bit better yesterday than other days although the DTV lost its signal from about 9.35 - 9.39pm or so.

So far there is no news paper article but it was mentioned on various news bulletins on the radio. I heard it on the 6'pm Sun FM news.

Thanks a lot for the news regarding a la carte. I think its better to introduce before the rugby world cup and 20/20 WC, so that most of the 500, 900 customers can benefit from it.

    @kavan,
I don't think tivo can be used here (for DTV or any other DTH service available in sri lanka/India). How do you going to get/put firmware into STB ?
According to what I've found we can only use DVD recorders with hard disk. Then we can do AD skipping, record DTH prg while watching local channel through normal antenna ect. Maybe I'm wrong here. please correct me if I'm wrong.

  22. Didn't any of you guys receive the announcement from DTV stating that they will be finalizing their channel lineup between the 13th and 15th August and that there may be several interruptions to transmission during this period? This message had been sent around 5.30 pm yesterday and I got it as soon as I switched on the decoder around 7.30 pm last night.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Soorapappa
I agree, It is best if DTV integrates a DVR to STB.

A TiVo can be hacked into be a DVR. When I asked for a DVR in Abans they wanted over US$600 when TiVo sell for under US$100 on eBay.

I don't understand how to get the DVR computer to change channels on STB. LG DVR probably only change channels on LG TV.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I too got that msg and wondering why this much q's regarding that. Only thing I've pissed off last night is that Zee studio totally blacked out when starting "Cold Mountain" (Just started to record :-(

    @kido-cmb,
I think its better to do these work during daytime and also don't put messages in this time (most of us do have automatic recordings during this time)

    @kavan,
Abans price is way too high. singapore prices are average and USA/Canada has the best prices. check this for Singapore prices: http://www.worldaudiocentre.com/default.asp?cat=DVD+Recorder

  26. Hi all,

DTV has sent a mailer today giving their new package prices as of 01st October 2007. The announced package changes are as below:

Current 500/- will be at 550/-
Current 900/- will be at 1550/-
Current 1400/- will be at 2100/-

All above rates are exclusive of VAT.

It seems that DTV is getting greedy here with the package prices.

Some healthy competition to the current state of affairs at DTV pricing is becoming a mandatory requirement to bring the DTV management tactics to bay.

DTV CAN TRY THIS AND SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Guys,I can confirm that the 2100/- + vat package is true. Its going to be for the new connections and 1400/- will hold the channels they have at present,But the bitter truth is that it will become a 900/- package in the present contex and new premier channels will all be added 2100/- in future.(like the present 1400/-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is typical DTV. we are fools if we did not see this comming.

What a stratergy, capture the market, increase rates, CUSTOMERS HAVE NO CHOICE BUT PAY OR WE DISCONNECT! what a stratergy!!!

  39. @cbnsatcustomer,
machang. I don't know exactly. You may contact them. But I don't think it's a good idea for ordering online, as our customs here put all taxes on it (one of my friend ordered digital camera and he regretted after. I'm not sure about this method and if someone has experience of electronic items shipped via this way, please share your experience with us). The reason I'm looking for prices in Singapore/Thailand is that one of my friend is regularly visiting (also can get an idea about market values).

    @kavan,
These items cannot change channels. You can give AV input from STB and record what you select on STB. But those have tuner and you can record regular TV channels with RF in.

    ReplyDelete
  40. No the exsisting customers will go on the present package structure, but you have to understand the reality that when new channels are added they will give everything to 2100/- and others may be allocated a fraction of it.

Ultimately ALF is going to be the winner.

  53. Guys:

    1. 1st of all can u really expect DTV to give u 60+ channels for 1400 ?

    2. Are u sure LBN & comet wont increase their rentals once they ad more channels ? U think DTV are fools to loose customers to LBN & comet by increasing prices ?

People in the same business are always in contact with each other to keep to ethical business practices. So DTV must be knowing we dont about LBN & comet.
If LBN increases their channel line up to 100, u think u will get it for the same rental ??? Of course not. Once they increase their coverage & expand, for sure ull see an increase!

Reg: ALF having the best deal, or any other DISH customers for that matter: Just compare the channel line up. Remember its not the quantity but the QUALITY OF CHANNELS.
Dish is half hindi crap & Indian feeds of channels. I said it earlier and i will keep saying it.

  54. Hi Mates,

Nice to be back after sometime but lot of confusion. It is very sad what DTV is tring to do.

I have predicted this many times. Lot of people attacked me saying that I was trying to create storm in tea cup.

This is what I said in first week of sugust ....
    Mates,.

Past two months I have been commenting on this line. But there have been very few takers. Most of people had hopes that they will get a better deal from DTV.

But again and agian DTV has proved what I commented about them is correct.

Whta I try to emphasis is that DTV is not a customer oriented company like CBNSAT. Just go through their package structure. That itself enough to prove my point.

It has been designed to drive all the customers towards 1600+ pkg.

And what about their behaviour after taking over CBNsat. WHat is the treatment given to CBNsat customers. How many new prime channells have been allocated to 500+ 850+ 900+ 1375+ pkgs.

Their track record during last eight months does not give any indication that they are going to act in a different manner.

DTV is driven by a set of people who want to Maximize their profit at the cost of the Existing customers.

I will be very happy if DTV proved me wrong in times to come.

    Lets wait and see...

So now wait is over. Now face the reality.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Amd,

DISH may be half hindi crap. But they have 170 chanells. You take out 110 channels for hindi and useless channells.

Then you have 60 good channells for 900buks. I think that is good enough for anybody.

Lot of DTV customers will be tempted to move away to DISHtv if DTV continue this arrogant behaviour.

  57. DishTV's platform to 200 channels by the end of this month.

Essel Group promoted Direct-to- Home services povider DishTV has chalked out an investment of Rs 800 crore in the next three years to have a strong foothold in the competitive space.

DTH market has been gaining grounds with big companies Reliance, Bharti Group and Sun TV planning to enter this space in the near future. DD Direct, Tata Sky and DishTV are among the three operational DTH players.

"We will invest Rs 800 crore in the next three years for upgradation of our infrastructure and increasing number of channels on our platform. We have already invested Rs 800 crore since the company's inception three years back," Essel Group Additional Vice President and DishTV Managing Director Jawahar Goel said.

DishTV, which currently has 2.25 million subscribers, is targeting a user base of 16-17 million by 2015, Goel said.

He said the company would also increase the number of channels on DishTV's platform to 200 by the end of this month and 400 by mid next year. DishTV currently has 169 channels.

"We will launch a new gaming service from the next month. It will be a pay service and users would be charged Re one per day or collectively for month, who will subscribe to this," Goel said.

The company already has a free gaming service, which provides subscribers with eight games, of which two are changed every month.

DishTV has also recently launched its Set Top Box (STB), which enables users to watch channels on their personal computers.

  58. @amd,

I think DTV also giving indian feeds except for the Star Movies.

why cant they expand their customer base keeping existing rates.

    ReplyDelete
  59. AMD and Mates,

I think there is limit for everything. WE have been tolerating all these DTV issues with high hopes that finally they will do something good for us.

It is really painful to see how badly and shabilly existing customers are treated.

In the market there are operators who can provide a good quality channells, even with indian feed,
at a reasonable rate. If DTV do this, I am not going to be with them any more.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Some people may ask If DTV dosent increase the price of exisiting packages can we complain?

The issue here is not increasing the prices for new content but increasing all package prices. when there are two package structures, It is inevitable that customers in no longer available packages being discriminated byt DTV. We have ample proof of this by the way that old CBNSat customers were treated when new channels were available on the 3rd transponder.

If DTV wants to add new content what they should have done is to create a new package like "Only for the rich 2100/-" and keep the existing sructures in place. This is not what DTV wants to do. they want to somehow cajole the existing customers to migrate to newer packages.

This is the problem when marketing guys are appointed to run companies they begin to belive the bullshit they dish out to the public. I am 100 % certain if the situation of the country dosent improve the buisness model adopted by DTV will fail along with the company.

I wrote the above assuiming the 2100/- package rumor is true but i wont be surprised if it is a marketing gimmick

    ReplyDelete
  61. @AMD,
Don't try to defend DTV at any cost. I'm totally agree with hsjaya. Don't compare 1600 pack with Dish. Compare Dish with DTV 900 package. If you don't know (or don't like to face the reality), here it is:

DTV : have AXN asia, Zone reality S. africa, cinemax asia, hallmark, australia network.
Dish : other than some of the indian feeds for above, you get star movies, MGM, TCM, PIX, Disney, Toon Disney, Boomerang, ten sports + lots of others I cannot remember

LBN is also better, only problem is coverage.

  63. Dialog TV provides Star channels to Sri Lankan viewers
    Tue, 2007-08-14 02:05

    Sunil C. Perera in Colombo

Colombo, 14 August, (Asiantribune.com): Dialog TV, Sri Lanka's has enlarged its bouquet of channels to its thousands of Sri Lankan viewers with the inclusion of the immensely popular range of Star Channels.

  69. DVR info seekers.

Noticed some blogs on DVR/HDD recorders. I have posted this earlier...

I have been using a Panasonic 200GB HDD recorder for 2 years now. Got it in SG for around 60k (2 years ago). It has sent my trusty VCR truly into retirement. Use it for all recordings of Cable, timeshifting, and a novell thing I never had on my VCR - recording & watching a program at the same time. This could be a different, or the same program (tech term:timelapse). I guess the HDD software is just like a PC where multitasking is possible. Google "Panasonic DMR-EH60" for more info, if needed...

Piece of advice, im my humble opinion - Abans prices are overated. When I got my Panasonic 200GB model at SG in 2005 for 60K, Abans were selling a LG model with a 80GB HDD for over 85k. Recommended option is to get it from abroad to escape overated taxes & profit margins.

Bottom Line: investing in a HDD/DVR for a TV addict is money well spent. I am very satisfied, and may never move back to a VCR for primary timeshifting requirements.

You don't have to say to convert but if DTV increase the rates I'm most of them will convert to Dish or Takasky.

I was thinking of selling my Dishtv connection but now I'm keeping it & disconnect or reduce DTV to Rs. 100 PKg if they increase the rates.

  76. I saw HBO channels quality of DTV @ a frnd's place well whats with the pixelisation? Arent these the most expensive channels on their lineup? why isnt more bandwidth allocated to these? Mixed movie lineup of these channels is pretty good though.

HBO channel on Dishtv is of very bad quality too. The channel feed dishtv gets is too dark it's almost like watching a camera copy.(and the movies it shows are horsefuck anyways).

Only good movie channel seems to be Star Movies but as far as i see it it still doesnt show latest movies.

Another drawback with indian feed is that programmes gets censored every which way. For example in PIX you are greeted by the message "This movie has been edited for family viewing in India".

I was thinking of converting to DTV too but now i have my doubts. Will the current 1400 package become obsolete just like the old CBN Rs850 package? you never know.

  77. I THINK THE DTV MANAGEMENT TEAM ARE ALL MUGS(SPECIALY THE PEOPLE WHO HANDLETHE COSTING PART) ,WHEN DISH TV IS INCREASING THEIR SUBSCRIBER BASE THEIR RENTAL HAS COME DOWN CONSIDERABLY AND DTV IS DOING VISE VERSA AND INCREASING THE RENTAL WHEN THEIR SUBSCRIBER BASE IS INCREASING.

KIDO-CMB - PLEASE TELL YOUR MANAGEMENTS WHO IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE ETHICS THAT ALF TOLD THEY ARE REAL MUGS AND TO LEARN FROM DISH AND TATA HOW TO RUN A DTH BUSINESS,I DONT THINK THIS MANAGEMENT MUGS REALY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT GET A SINGLE BUSINESS (SEND A MAIL VIA YOUR BLACKBERRY TO THE MUGS)

Retail Value of Super 500 (Rental Rs. 500/-) with 3 Additional Channels - Rs 550/-
    Admin pls pass this...

  84. Mates,

What ALF says about rentals in DISHTV is correct. Generally renatl fees should come down when they expand the customer base. In INDIA cable operators are charging average Rs600/- ( SL RS ) monthly as rental.

This system are in operation in few companies in Sri Lanka.

For Example my TP is SUNTEL and when they started the rental was 650/- and now it has gone down to
    402/-

Very recdently Supreme Court also gave a ruling with regard to reduction in TP renals of SL telecom.

So this is nothing new. Only thing is DTV marketing idiots are arrogant and do not want to treat customers well. They think the entire market is for them to play pucks and football as and when they wish.

Make sure, this price change is aplicable only to the new users. Some of top class no 1 contants coming to the dtv line up soon. As u knw the channels are very expensive. Not like per head charge. Hope u got it n am repeating the same mesage againg this price change only to the new comers.
Any now onwards u ppl able to get the additional channels...
    @ cable:
    TP4 is aval'le from september.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I will tell very clearly, all these star channels and few other channels are additional channels for many people. So it bonus for many.

When DTV introduces new channels, most of them will go to 2100/- pack. only couple of low cost channels will be added to 1400/- and lesser package. All free channels will be added to 100/- package.

Now if you want to get all channels no matter what you have to upgrade to 2100/- package.

Then again they will (DTV) know who to make present 500 and 900 package people to come to 1400/- and 1400/- people to come to 2100/-

You save this message and keep it, one day i will see the same implemented.

  94. @kido-cmb

can you give any hints of the content which is supposed to come on TP4

    ReplyDelete
  95. The key to me here is the content and the continued existence of existing package structures. If the current package structures are not abolished and if the new content is really, really good and not availble in the south asian region for a cheaper price i dont mind if DTV introduced a 2100/- package. we as existing customers dont have to buy it if we dont want to while ppl who can afford it can buy it.

  99. only one person spoke about this 2100 thing and already everyone is upset. knowing the kind of idiots running dtv its quite possible too.

but think about it, well, if dtv plans to increase their rental to 2100/=.. then they will be digging their own grave. an increase of that propotion will only mean a severe decrease in their growth. growth which is of utmost importance to dtv. and if competition (by way of lbn, and more importantly comet, IF, it goes digital) arises, that will spell disaster for dtv.

lets not forget that when comet was the dominant cable company, they incrased prices as they pleased without losing any customers. even lbn did not pose a threat to them. they thought they were invincible until cbnsat launched and comet didnt know what hit them.

lets see what happens. actions have consequences.

Any way I havent any matter if they channege channels and channel prises for new connections.

  106. received a flier dated 14 Aug from DTV re package enhancement.(KIDO must have got a copy of that yesterday.

They talk of only 53 channels. nothing mentioned abt Star Cricket. by the looks of it its going to be in the 2100/-+ pkg.

i'm in the 900 Pkg(ESPN/POGO). but if i'm to be a new subscriber i would not want to pay 1550/-+ VAT for that line up.

    ReplyDelete
  107. If what nishantha said is true, then its perfectly logical what DTV is doing, like i said earlier, can u expect them to give u 68 channels ( 54 + new 14 ) for the same 1400 pkg ?
and further more its the asian feed of some channels, so it costs more ?

I agree that DTV is neglecting the middle class people, and obviously i know all of us 1400 customers would LOVE to have those 68 channels and more even for the same 1400, year after year, but its not practicaly possible.

DTV is not CBN SAT so dont expect them to be so.

    ReplyDelete
  108. @Kavan,

It can change channels on normal RF via its inbuilt tuner (just like a VCR)

It cannot change channels on the DTV STB via AV. There is no hotlink, only composite & S-video. I doubt even if a hotlink would have worked as they are totally different brands (i.e Panasonic, Made in Japan & CBNSat STB, Made in China)

This also pisses me off sometimes, as I tend to record some cool docs off Nat Geo/Disc in the afternoon's (while I'm at work), but miss some movies on Star that usually start around 3pm... Life isn't perfect yet ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  109. Arent any of you guys aware about the channel list change. DTv has f***** up big time a when i checked today a fair number of channels were not working. The channel lineup has changed but name of the channel and program guide you get when pressing the info button still reflects the old channel name

Some the channels names change, some channels were not working, some were stuck, and most had the wrong EPG.

What time did u do the re-scan ?

    ReplyDelete
  115. A channel re-scan will not solve this problem. it has to be corrected by DTV

    ReplyDelete
  116. cable

they told us about this by a message saying "transmission will interruptions from the 13th-15th due to the re-arranging"

so we have to be patient until they finish their work

  117. @jessika

why should we be paitent? the loss of signals started from about 12.30 am last night now its 10.30 am almost 10 hours and they still cant get it going? Is this how a professional company should be run?

Will they be patient if we dont pay our bills on time?

We dont have to be patient for anything! This is not a mom and pop operation which is given us for free. If i pay for a service i expect it to be supplied at the time i want.
